Accra: The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has launched criticism against President John Dramani Mahama following the president's recent comments regarding the LGBTQ+ bill. Fordjour accused Mahama of backtracking on earlier commitments and misleading the public and religious leaders during the election period.
According to Ghana Web, Ntim Fordjour expressed his concerns through a post on his X page on March 31, 2026. He questioned the silence of ecumenical bodies and civil society organizations that were previously vocal on LGBTQ-related matters in 2024, during the tenure of President Akufo-Addo. Fordjour highlighted what he perceives as a lack of consistency and commitment from these groups in holding the current administration accountable.
Fordjour further accused President Mahama and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of sidelining LGBTQ+ concerns despite previous assurances to uphold traditional values. He insisted that the president's recent stance represents a significant departure from earlier promises and described it as a betrayal of trust. Fordjour referred to the situation as "another Mahama scam," suggesting a pattern of deceptive practices by the administration.
In response to the criticism, President Mahama has urged for a calm and measured approach to the LGBTQ+ debate. During an engagement with civil society organizations at the Jubilee House in Accra on March 30, 2026, the president emphasized the need for dialogue and prioritization of more pressing national challenges. Mahama described the LGBTQ+ issue as sensitive and emotionally charged but not the most critical concern facing the nation.
President Mahama clarified that Ghana must focus on addressing fundamental socio-economic needs that affect citizens' daily lives, including education, healthcare, employment, and basic provisions such as food, clothing, and shelter. He called for a balanced approach in addressing the LGBTQ+ issue while attending to the nation's broader challenges.
