New Sports Fund Aims to Revolutionize Infrastructure and Athlete Support in Ghana

Accra: Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has unveiled the transformative potential of the newly established Sports Fund, describing it as a significant advancement towards enhancing accountability, infrastructure, and athlete support nationwide. The minister shared his insights during an interview with Joel Eshun on Ghanaweb's Sports Check program, expressing confidence in the initiative's ability to tackle persistent challenges in sports financing.

According to Ghana Web, Kofi Adams emphasized that the fund introduces a structured system designed to ensure a higher level of accountability and transparency in the management of sports funding. This approach is expected to build greater trust in the sports sector. He noted that the fund will prioritize directing resources to critical areas, with a particular focus on athlete welfare, to address issues such as poverty among retired athletes and lack of support for injured athletes.

The minister also highlighted existing deficiencies in sports infrastructure, particularly the lack of athletics facilities in several regions. Many athletes are forced to train on basic, unstructured surfaces due to the absence of running tracks. While multiple funding sources have been identified to support the Sports Fund, Kofi Adams suggested that additional revenue options, including a potential tax handle, could be explored in the future if public confidence in the fund grows.
