Accra: Madam Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, Chairperson of the Women's Caucus in Parliament, issued a stern warning to men planning to contest female candidates in the 2028 elections, urging them to withdraw or face public exposure. This statement follows Ghana's low ranking of 149th out of 188 countries in terms of women's political representation, prompting concerns about the nation's sluggish progress in this area.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Doyoe Cudjoe addressed Parliament, underscoring the need for intentional measures to empower women and enhance their participation in governance. She cautioned that men who challenge female parliamentarians in the upcoming election would be publicly 'named and shamed' to protect the few women currently serving.
As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ada and First Deputy Majority Whip, Madam Doyoe referenced a recent United Nations report that criticized Ghana's poor performance in promoting women's representation. She acknowledged the Speaker of Parliament, expressing disappointment over the findings and pointing out the disparity between countries actively supporting women and those doing little.
The Women's Caucus intends to meet with the Speaker of Parliament to discuss strategies for supporting female legislators and improving their chances of retaining their seats. Madam Doyoe emphasized the importance of presenting the UN report to the Speaker and discussing ways to bolster the positions of sitting female MPs in the next elections.
