Adaklu: The chiefs and people of Adaklu Sofa in the Adaklu district organized a large-scale cleanup exercise in the community to commemorate the March edition of the National Sanitation Day.
According to Ghana News Agency, the community members engaged in various activities such as desilting gutters and drains, sweeping streets and marketplaces, clearing weeds, and collecting and burning plastics and other waste materials. Mr. Jerry Yao Ameko, the Adaklu District Chief Executive, participated in the event and praised the community for their significant turnout.
Mr. Ameko emphasized that the exercise, initiated by President John Dramani Mahama, aims not only to tidy communities but also to reduce the spread of diseases like malaria, typhoid, and diarrhoea. He announced plans for him and officials from the Environmental Health Unit of the Assembly to visit communities every first Saturday of the month to ensure compliance with the exercise.
Participation in the sanitation day is obligatory in the district, Mr. Ameko informed the people. He encouraged Assembly members, chiefs, religious leaders, and Civil Society Organisations to lead in mobilizing the community for the exercise. He advised community leaders to report those who refuse to participate to his office for further action.
Mr. Ameko also motivated the community to strive towards making the district one of the cleanest in the country to boost socio-economic development. Mrs. Stella Vidzro, the Adaklu District Environmental Health Officer, who also joined the exercise, urged the community to maintain their enthusiasm, noting that the cleanup would help minimize disease spread and deter rodents and reptiles.
