Accra: Provisional results from the Ayawaso East Parliamentary by-election have been released, showcasing a competitive race among the five candidates vying for the parliamentary seat.
According to Ghana News Agency, the election has seen Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leading in several polling stations, with significant votes at Mallam Sani Polling Station 1, where he garnered 145 votes. His closest competitor, Umar Sanda Mohammed, an Independent candidate, secured 168 votes at the same station, indicating a tight competition.
At Mallam Sani Polling Station 2, Baba Jamal received 76 votes, while Umar Sanda Mohammed led with 81 votes. Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) obtained 35 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and David Akonor, another Independent candidate, failed to secure any votes at this station.
The results from St. Louis Clinic showed Baba Jamal with 90 votes, Umar Sanda Mohammed with 66, and Baba Ali Yusif with 39. Again, Ibrahim Iddrisu and David Akonor did not receive any votes at this location.
Al-Saffiya Polling Station B reported Baba Jamal leading with 113 votes, followed by Baba Ali Yusif with 39, and Umar Sanda Mohammed with 10. At Al-Saffiya Polling Station A, Baba Jamal secured 105 votes, Baba Ali Yusif 55, Umar Sanda Mohammed 10, and David Akonor 1 vote, while Ibrahim Iddrisu did not receive any votes.
At Presby Church of Hope Nima 1, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed maintained his lead with 90 votes, Baba Ali Yusif received 32, and Umar Sanda Mohammed 14. Both Ibrahim Iddrisu and David Akonor did not secure any votes, with one ballot rejected.
The Islamic Research Institute 1 results showed Baba Jamal obtaining 65 votes, Umar Sanda Mohammed 57, and Baba Ali Yusif 13. At Islamic Research Institute 2, Baba Jamal received 70 votes, Umar Sanda Mohammed 57, and Baba Ali Yusif 7, with Ibrahim Iddrisu and David Akonor not receiving any votes.
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mr. Naser Toure Mahama, in January 2026, leaving a vacancy in the constituency. The outcome of this election will determine the new representative for Ayawaso East in Parliament.
