Accra: Austria has reiterated its dedication to enhancing its strategic alliance with Ghana, focusing on political, economic, and cultural cooperation. Mr Josef Franz Schellhorn, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria, highlighted Ghana's role as a pivotal partner in promoting peace and stability during the official opening of the Second Session of the Ghana-Austria Political Consultations in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Schellhorn emphasized Austria's commitment to moving beyond dialogue to engage in practical, technical, and institutional cooperation with Ghana, particularly in peacebuilding and security. He noted Austria's support for multilateral engagement and its contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations, where Austrian and Ghanaian peacekeepers work together in various missions. Collaboration with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre and the Ghana Armed Forces in specialised training initiatives was also highlighted.
On the economic front, Mr Schellhorn pointed out the increasing recognition by Austrian companies of Ghana's economic potential. He identified sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, waste management, water systems, and green technologies as areas where Austrian expertise could support Ghana's development goals, creating mutually beneficial investment opportunities. The importance of cultural diplomacy was underscored, with the opening of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Accra serving as a milestone in Austria's long-term commitment to Ghana.
Mr James Gyakye Quayson, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, praised the consultations as a significant step in advancing the longstanding friendship between Ghana and Austria. He highlighted the partnership's foundation on mutual respect, solidarity, and shared commitments to peace, prosperity, and sustainable development. Mr Quayson also acknowledged Austria's role in development projects in Ghana, financed through Austrian concessional loans, which have improved infrastructure and water supply.
Ambassador Harold Adlai Agyeman described the meeting as an important milestone in the cordial relations between Ghana and Austria, which have been strengthened through high-level visits and sustained political dialogue. The official opening of the Austrian Embassy in Accra in 2024 was noted as a catalyst for deeper diplomatic and economic engagement. The consultations covered a range of topics, including political, economic, and trade matters, as well as regional and multilateral issues.
The discussions reflected optimism for meaningful outcomes and the continued strengthening of the partnership between Ghana and Austria.
