Accra: Two individuals have been arraigned before the Adabraka District Court for allegedly causing damage to a tombstone at the Osu Cemetery in Accra. The accused are Eric Tawiah Annang, a 62-year-old contractor, and Joseph Donkor, a 35-year-old labourer. They have been jointly charged with abetment of crime, while Donkor faces an additional charge of causing unlawful damage to a tombstone valued at GHS4,500, which is the property of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly.
According to Ghana Web, both individuals pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of GHS10,000 each, with two sureties required. The court has scheduled them to reappear on March 24, 2026. Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, who is prosecuting the case, stated that the complainant is the Head of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly Task Force. Annang resides at Osu, while Donkor is based at the Arts Centre, Accra.
The prosecution detailed that on February 8, 2026, at approximately 0800 hours, the Sexton of the Osu Cemetery, who serves as a witness in the case, conducted a patrol following reports of illegal grave digging activities. During this patrol, the Sexton reportedly heard a noise and discovered Donkor and an accomplice in the act of attempting to disinter a grave, having already damaged a tombstone.
The witness instructed the individuals to cease their activities and to accompany him to his office. On the way, Annang allegedly informed the witness that he had hired Donkor and his accomplice for the task, claiming he possessed a permit. However, when a Task Force team arrived at the cemetery, Donkor's accomplice managed to flee the scene. Annang and Donkor were subsequently arrested and taken to the Osu Police Station for further investigations.
Chief Inspector Achana reported that during the investigations, both Annang and Donkor admitted to the offence.
