Accra: The Country Manager of Qatar Airways, StellaMaris Ndunge Akhwale, has urged the government to address the escalating costs of air travel charges, warning that excessive fees could negatively impact Ghana's tourism and trade sectors. Speaking at the 5th AviationGhana Breakfast Meeting in Accra, Akhwale emphasized the importance of keeping ticket prices affordable to ensure that they do not become a barrier to international visitors.
According to Ghana Web, Akhwale highlighted concerns over a $100 charge on return tickets set to be implemented from April 1, emphasizing the critical role of connectivity in bolstering tourism and trade. She urged the government and relevant stakeholders to collaborate in maintaining Ghana as an attractive and competitive destination for travelers.
Akhwale further noted that sector projections indicate that adopting a hybrid model could potentially generate $33 million annually while also supporting an increase in passenger growth. However, she warned that introducing a high Airport Infrastructure Development charge could lead to a 10-15% decline in passenger volumes, which would hinder Ghana's appeal to tourists and investors alike.
