NDC Majority Caucus Demands Cancellation of Ayawaso East Primary Over Vote-Buying Allegations

Accra: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus in Parliament has called for the immediate cancellation of the just-ended parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency. They have also called for the disqualification of candidates found to have engaged in vote buying. According to Ghana News Agency, in a statement issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, and signed by Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, the Caucus condemned the alleged acts, describing them as contrary to the party's stated agenda to reset Ghana's politics and restore integrity to the democratic process. "The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics," the statement said. The statement also demanded a ban on any candidate who participated in the election and was established to have allegedly engaged in vote buying from contesting in any rerun of the primary. The controversy surrounds the distribution of items, including alleged 32-inch t elevision sets and boiled eggs, to delegates during the voting process. Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has recalled Mr. Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, the winner of the primary, from his position as Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria, citing the allegations. A three-member committee, chaired by former Minister of Information, Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi, has been constituted to investigate the allegations and is expected to submit its report by Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
