Yeji: The Bono East Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has engaged with inmates and personnel of the Yeji Prisons Camp in the Pru East District to educate them on the risks associated with illicit drug use and substance abuse. This initiative aimed to inform the prison community about the health risks and broader societal implications of drug abuse.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Sulemana Mahama, Head of the Education Team at the Bono East NACOC Regional Command, emphasized the Commission's commitment to enhancing public awareness about the harmful effects of illicit drugs. He highlighted that engaging with communities and institutions is a crucial part of NACOC's national strategy to combat drug abuse. Mr Mahama encouraged inmates to adopt behavioral changes, underscoring that personal reformation is crucial for their successful reintegration into society post-incarceration. He further explained that the outreach is part of NACOC's ongoing public education and prevention efforts to minimize drug-related harm.
Chief Superintendent of Prisons Eli Buasti, Officer-in-Charge of the Yeji Camp, praised NACOC for the initiative. He regarded the sensitization program as beneficial for both inmates and prison personnel, urging them to refrain from drug abuse due to its criminal implications and negative impact on health and wellbeing.
The Commission's counselling unit also conducted one-on-one sessions with inmates and personnel and performed screenings for selected inmates to identify health conditions linked to substance abuse, offering guidance and necessary referrals.
