2025 AFCON More Appealing Than World Cup and Euros, Says Former Sports Minister

Accra: Former sports minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has remarked that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) surpassed the allure of other major international tournaments such as the World Cup and the European Championships (Euros) due to its captivating aesthetics.

According to Ghana Web, Vanderpuye attributed the tournament's appeal to the vibrant presence of fans at the stadiums and the infectious joy and excitement they brought. He emphasized that the commitment and full participation of the supporters enhanced the event's attractiveness, making it stand out from its international counterparts.

The former Member of Parliament for the Odododiodio constituency highlighted the unique contributions of fans from various African countries. He mentioned how Nigerians, Senegalese, and Moroccans added to the brand of the Cup of Nations with their colorful participation. Vanderpuye noted that the aesthetics of the AFCON, along with the joy and color the supporters infused into the tournament, were worth celebrating.

Vanderpuye expressed his hopes for similar support and branding from African countries at the 2026 World Cup, encouraging engagement with stakeholders and leadership of supporters' groups to project local culture on a global stage.
