Accra: The Director-General of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has responded to allegations made by former National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) CEO Kofi Owusu Nkansah. Nkansah claimed that government scholarships are being sold for up to GHS100,000 under the current administration.
According to Ghana Web, Asafo-Agyei took to social media on February 3, 2026, to address the allegations. He contested Nkansah's claims, stating that the scholarships in question were supposedly allocated for studies in the United Kingdom. He clarified that the government led by John Dramani Mahama has not issued any scholarships for study in the UK since taking office.
The Director-General expressed his satisfaction that President Mahama has referred the allegations to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) for a thorough investigation. Asafo-Agyei emphasized that under his leadership, no scholarships have been awarded for UK studies and that this stance has been clearly communicated to UK institutions.
Asafo-Agyei accused Nkansah of making the allegations to draw police attention, asserting that scholarships will only be awarded to deserving individuals and not sold to the highest bidder. He criticized the previous administration, claiming it left the nation in a worse state and issued fraudulent awards.
The controversy arose from Nkansah's statements that he knew of individuals, including New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, who had purchased scholarships for significant sums. He asserted that such practices occur regardless of whether the NDC or NPP is in power, highlighting the need for reforms such as those proposed by Dr. Bawumia.
