Caracas: Venezuelan opposition leader Mara Corina Machado asserted on Sunday that the US intervention in Venezuela has initiated an 'unstoppable' political transition.
According to Ghana News Agency, Machado emphasized in an interview with CBS News that the transitional government led by acting President Delcy Rodrguez is beginning to understand that significant changes are underway. Machado, who received the Nobel Peace Prize last year for her contributions to the Venezuelan opposition, credited these developments to the pressure exerted by the United States.
Machado warned that without US pressure, Rodrguez might revert to her previous allegiances. Since the US military operation on January 3, which aimed to remove authoritarian president Nicol¡s Maduro, Venezuela has released hundreds of political prisoners under US influence.
In a recent development, the government announced a sweeping amnesty for political prisoners from 1999 onward. Many of those released had been detained during protests against Maduro's controversial 2024 re-election, which faced accusations of fraud.
Furthermore, the Venezuelan parliament has approved a reform of the oil industry to attract additional foreign investment. Rodrguez, appointed as acting president following Maduro's capture, remains a key figure in negotiations with the US, particularly regarding the management of Venezuela's substantial oil reserves.
