Navrongo: The Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, announced that the Government plans to establish and inaugurate a Governing Council for St. John Bosco's College of Education by February 10, 2026.
According to Ghana News Agency, the College has been operating without a Governing Council due to disputes over the legal guidelines concerning the tenure of council members and chairpersons. This absence has affected the governance and management of the College. Speaking at the College's 14th Congregation in Navrongo, Mr. Iddrisu stressed the urgency of forming the Council to ensure proper administrative oversight.
Mr. Iddrisu attributed the delay to differing interpretations of the law, which restricts council members and chairpersons to two four-year terms. He noted that a strict interpretation of the law indicates that the tenure requirement had been fulfilled. However, he mentioned receiving advice that St. John Bosco's College of Education, being a Catholic Church-owned institution, might allow tenure arrangements aligned with other faith-based tertiary institutions.
The Minister assured that, with this understanding, the Ministry of Education, alongside the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the local community, would promptly reconstitute and inaugurate the new Governing Council before academic activities recommence in two weeks. Mr. Iddrisu pledged to establish the council within a fortnight to enhance governance and support the College's Principal and management.
Mr. Iddrisu extended congratulations to the graduating students and praised the staff and management for their commitment to teacher education. He encouraged the new graduates to demonstrate professionalism and integrity in their forthcoming teaching roles.
Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, Director-General of GTEC, lauded the College for its contributions to teacher training and promised ongoing support from the Commission. Meanwhile, Professor Clement Ayarebilla Ali, the College Principal, expressed gratitude to the Government for its support but highlighted the institution's infrastructural needs, appealing for urgent assistance.
