Tamale: The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven people in connection with a highway robbery involving a Member of the Council of State. The suspects are Rashid Yusif, Aaron Abana Baswiefanga, Wilson Avasong, Muntaru Iddrisu alias Virgin, Aminu Zebrilla alias Birdman, Inusah Sumaila alias Agenda, and Haruna Safiano.
According to Ghana News Agency, a police brief signed by Commissioner of Police (COP) Ms Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), stated that the robbery took place on July 21, 2025, on the Tamale-Buipe Highway. Six armed men reportedly attacked the victim and stole mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop, and other personal belongings.
Intelligence gathered by the CID led to an operation by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit in Salaga, Savannah Region, on January 11, 2026. During the operation, Rashid Yusif was apprehended and found in possession of an iPhone 7 Plus belonging to one of the victims, which was retrieved.
Further investigations led police to a mobile phone shop at Dagomba Line in Salaga, resulting in the arrest of shop attendant Aaron Abana Baswiefanga. He revealed that the phone had been brought to the shop by his uncle, Wilson Avasong, an environmental officer and owner of the shop based in Tamale.
COP Donkor explained that Avasong was subsequently arrested and informed investigators that he had purchased the phone from a repairer named Muntaru Iddrisu, also known as Virgin, for GHS1,000. Iddrisu was later detained at the Tamale Aboabo Market and directed police to Aminu Zebrilla, alias Birdman, a 35-year-old okada rider at Dungu. Zebrilla admitted to selling the phone to Iddrisu for GHS650.

Investigations also revealed Zebrilla's status as an ex-convict who previously served time for robbery in 2012. Two additional suspects, Inusah Sumaila, 42, and Haruna Safiano, 32, were apprehended at their hideouts behind the Tamale China Mall.
COP Donkor stated that investigations are ongoing to capture other suspects believed to be at large and to recover a weapon still in their possession.
