Vice President Advocates for Land and Water Reforms to Boost Agricultural Production

Accra: The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reiterated the government's commitment to safeguarding Ghana's land and water resources in an effort to enhance agricultural production and reduce the country's reliance on food imports. According to Ghana Web, speaking after a briefing by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on January 27, 2026, the Vice President expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration between the lands and agriculture sectors. She emphasized the importance of a reliable water supply for farming activities, highlighting that effective coordination between these sectors is crucial for achieving food security in Ghana. The Vice President emphasized Ghana's favorable climate, advocating that the country should be capable of producing most of its food locally. She pointed out that living in the tropics provides an opportunity for diverse agricultural production, which should translate into reduced food imports. Professor Opoku-Agyemang stated, "We live in the tropics. Almost everything grows here. At the very least, our food should grow here. We shouldn't live in the tropics and import the majority of our food." While acknowledging the diverse food preferences of the population, the Vice President emphasized that access to locally produced staple foods must not be compromised. She assured stakeholders of the government's readiness to collaborate with all relevant sectors to achieve food security and promote sustainable land use. She concluded her remarks by pledging the government's commitment to working with stakeholders in the agriculture and land sectors. During her visit, Professor Opoku-Agyemang engaged with ministry staff to discuss issues concerning its operations and to affirm the government's support for the ministry's initiatives.
