Accra: Mr Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the Deputy Minister of Finance, has emphasized the Government's commitment to empowering the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to effectively safeguard national security and bolster economic growth. The Government aims to implement policy reforms to fortify the Division's capabilities through digitalization and investments in modern infrastructure and technology.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Nyarko Ampem made these remarks during the International Customs Day 2026 celebrations in Accra. The event, organized by the World Customs Organization (WCO), highlights the vital role of Customs administrations in regulating the movement of goods and capital across borders. The theme for the celebration, 'Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment,' underscores the critical responsibilities of Customs officers in maintaining alertness, dedication, and professionalism in their duties.
Mr Nyarko Ampem pointed out that amid growing global trade and complex security threats, Customs' role extends beyond mere revenue collection. He emphasized that Customs officers are tasked with protecting national borders, ports, airports, and entry points while facilitating the efficient clearance of legitimate trade to support economic growth. He acknowledged Ghana's reliance on the Customs Division's vigilance and commitment to prevent the influx of illicit drugs, small arms, counterfeit pharmaceuticals, substandard goods, and environmentally harmful products, which pose significant risks to public health, national security, and economic stability.
The Deputy Minister highlighted the necessity of strong partnerships among government institutions, security agencies, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society to protect society effectively. He outlined the Government's goal of building an efficient and professional Customs administration responsive to both the State's and the trading community's needs, ensuring a secure environment for all stakeholders.
Mr Nyarko Ampem stressed the importance of effective revenue mobilization for the Government's ability to provide essential services like infrastructure, quality education, and healthcare. He called on Customs officers to recommit to integrity, patriotism, and professionalism, emphasizing the elimination of corruption and fraud. He noted that every lost cedi represents a missed opportunity for national development, translating into unbuilt schools, poor roads, and inadequate healthcare, water, and sanitation services. He urged officers to uphold the highest ethical standards, demonstrating transparency, accountability, and service to the nation, as their vigilance is crucial to securing the economy and safeguarding Ghana's future.
Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan, Commissioner of the Customs Division, GRA, reiterated the Division's role as a societal guardian and state protector. He highlighted the Division's commitment to revenue protection and national development, demonstrated through preventing revenue leakages and mobilizing resources to support government programs. The Commissioner called for enhanced collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen border security and public safety, noting that collective efforts enhance Customs' capacity to fulfill its mandate. He also emphasized the Division's adaptation to modern security systems, demonstrating its competence as a forward-looking institution capable of safeguarding national interests in an evolving global environment.
