Accra: The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has served notice to the government that it will not entertain any attempts to allegedly extend President John Dramani Mahama's tenure beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, addressed the issue directly to President Mahama, urging him to remind his party members that a third term is not possible. During a press conference at Parliament House on Monday, titled 'Holding the Government Account: A Year of Active Responsible Minority Scrutiny in Ghana's Ninth Parliament,' Mr. Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the Caucus's dedication to holding the government accountable and ensuring adherence to the rule of law.
In addition to the concerns about a third-term agenda, the group voiced apprehensions about alleged attempts to manipulate the judiciary. Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who is also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, called on judges to maintain impartiality and uphold their oath of office. He emphasized that the Caucus's stance is a proactive measure to prevent any potential power grab by the ruling party.
