Accra: Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has rejected claims that supporters of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are intimidating delegates ahead of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential primaries, describing the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated. Speaking on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem on January 22, 2026, Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that Ghana's democratic culture makes intimidation in party elections unrealistic, stressing that delegates cannot be coerced into voting against their will.
According to Ghana Web, Oppong Nkrumah found the claims of intimidation amusing, questioning how anyone could intimidate someone in the context of an internal election. He argued that such allegations often surface when aspirants begin to lose support and are typically used to explain anticipated defeat.
He illustrated his point by citing his own constituency, where he noted that delegates would vote according to their convictions, not due to any pressure. He stated, "In my constituency, some people will vote for Bawumia and others will vote for different candidates. That is democracy, and nobody can intimidate anyone."
Oppong Nkrumah also warned that internal attacks and careless statements could harm the party's image and inadvertently benefit the opposition. He referenced how comments made by party members were used against the NPP in the 2024 general elections, underscoring the need for caution.
He urged all aspirants and their supporters to refrain from trading accusations, instead suggesting a focus on engaging delegates with ideas and visions for the party. "Our focus should be on campaigning and selling our ideas so delegates can make informed choices. That is what will strengthen the party," he indicated.
