Accra: Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang discussed issues pertaining to sporting activities in the country during her official visit to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation on January 22, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Sports Minister Kofi Adams briefed her on the achievements and reforms undertaken since President John Dramani Mahama assumed office in 2025.
One of the significant achievements highlighted was the budget review for the Black Stars, which saved Ghana approximately $700,000. Kofi Adams also emphasized the government's role in securing a broadcast partner for the Ghana Premier League (GPL), which has improved match viewership and patronage.
The minister further elaborated on the financial support system implemented for the Ghana Premier League. Government efforts have ensured that Premiership clubs receive GHS1 million in advance before the league's start, with the ultimate winner earning GHS2 million, marking an improvement from previous prize structures.
Adams commended the government's efforts in settling outstanding debts owed to former national team coaches, highlighting that these actions restored trust and confidence in the administration's commitment to sports.
A National Sports Fund has been established following cabinet approval and parliamentary assent. Act 1159 aims to mobilize resources for infrastructure upgrades, grassroots development, elite athlete preparation, and support systems.
Kofi Adams also shared insights into the budget savings achieved through rationalizing the national team's expenditures, reducing costs from GHS2 million to GHS1.3 million for two outings, without compromising the team's or technical staff's needs.
Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang addressed concerns about delays in fund disbursement, assuring her commitment to working with stakeholders to expedite the process. She acknowledged the widespread concern and emphasized the importance of resolving these issues for the ministry's benefit.
