Accra: The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has disclosed that his review of the Black Stars' budget for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers saved the nation about $700,000. According to him, scrutinising the team's budget and cutting unnecessary expenses saved funds that could be redirected into other sporting disciplines. The Member of Parliament for the Buem constituency also revealed that the ministry previously budgeted GHS2 million for games, but through rationalization, this figure has now been reduced drastically to GHS1.3 million.
According to Ghana Web, the savings were achieved by collaborating with the Football Association (FA) to ensure proper budgeting and release processes. Kofi Adams shared these details during a meeting with Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, emphasizing that the budget rationalization exercise will continue, as it has instilled confidence in the squad. He assured that neither the players nor the technical team suffered due to the budget cuts.
President John Dramani Mahama has also expressed support for budget rationalization, stating that all budgets related to national teams will undergo scrutiny before approval to prevent overspending. This initiative aligns with the broader financial strategy of the sports ministry to manage resources prudently while maintaining team performance and morale.
