Davos: President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the advanced nations of the global north to support the Accra Reset Initiative. The President made the appeal when he formally unveiled the Accra Reset Initiative at the Davos Commitment on the sideline of the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama emphasized that his request was not for charity but for a global partnership based on shared vision and mutual respect. He outlined that the Accra Reset aims to establish a new model of cooperation, where countries from the Global South co-design programs with partners from the north, and shape investments that align with their priorities. The initiative seeks to create "Prosperity Spheres" where countries collaborate on investment, infrastructure, and job creation.
President Mahama expressed his desire to leave a legacy where young Africans do not risk their lives for opportunities elsewhere, but instead find them at home. He called on global leaders to join in creating systems that work and industries that thrive, emphasizing that neither Ghana nor Africa can achieve this alone. He urged leaders who believe in shared prosperity and genuine partnership with the Global South to join the initiative.
Reflecting on past global cooperation, President Mahama recalled the successful global response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, led by former leaders like UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President Olusegun Obasanjo. He noted that the current challenges require similar global collaboration, as Africa faces unfulfilled potential, youth unemployment, and fragile health systems.
He highlighted Ghana's efforts to address these issues through government spending cuts, digitalization of services to combat corruption, and training for future jobs. The country has also renegotiated its debt to prioritize investment in its people, aligning with the "Resetting Ghana" agenda.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, leading the Guardian Circle of the Accra Initiative, emphasized the importance of preparing for the future through negotiation, unity, and organization. He mentioned plans to integrate the Accra Initiative into the North-South Dialogue to secure critical reforms and concrete projects enhancing access to health facilities and technology.
