Ghana’s Free Zones Sector Secures $165 Million Investment, Generates 1,600 Jobs: Minister of Trade

Accra: The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has announced a significant development in Ghana's free zones sector, which recorded investments amounting to $165.29 million. This influx of investment has resulted in the creation of over 1,600 jobs, reinforcing investor confidence in the nation.

According to Ghana Web, during the Government Accountability Series on January 21, 2026, Ofosu-Adjare highlighted that export earnings from companies within the Free Zones reached $973.43 million in 2025. This figure is approaching the $1 billion milestone and exceeds the earnings recorded in 2024. The minister noted that 27 new enterprises have been registered under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to enhance intra-African trade, as the government aims to establish Ghana as a leading trade hub on the continent.

Ofosu-Adjare emphasized the ministry's ongoing efforts to expand Ghana's presence in international markets through the establishment of export trade houses, particularly across Africa. Additional facilities are in progress in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She also mentioned the growing interest of Chinese investors, who are acquiring stakes and forming joint ventures in Ghana following contractual agreements.

The minister reaffirmed the government's dedication to supporting Ghanaian exporters in light of the expiration of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the introduction of new tariffs by the United States. She outlined plans to diversify export markets, with ongoing discussions with China to secure an early harvest agreement under a zero-tariff regime to bolster exports.
