Prampram: Ms Juliana Gharbin, a Ghanaian beader, has been adjudged the Guinness World Record holder for the largest beads sculpture of a bag. Guinness World Records confirmed the feat on its website, and the record holder is set to unveil her official certificate on Saturday, January 24, at the Ocean Green Beach Resort at Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the 33-year-old made the attempt on March 1, 2025, and accomplished the feat in 10 days with the support of the 'Jules Beads Team' made up of eight others, including her trainees. In an interview, Ms Gharbin said she was inspired by the desire to promote African artistry and put Ghanaian craftsmanship on the global stage. She initially applied to bead for longer hours and make different designs, but her application was rejected. The suggestion for a sculpture led her to create one large bag, a decision she made in September 2023.
Ms Gharbin disclosed that despite receiving approval in 2023, there were numerous requirements and financial commitments needed to start the 'attempt,' causing a delay. The team began working on the project in January 2024, with initial plans set for October 2024, but plans had to be postponed to 2025. The largest bead sculpture measures 2.69 meters by 2.05 meters by 1.47 meters and features the colors of Ghana's national flag: red, yellow, green, and black. The bag also includes two Adinkra symbols representing versatility and loyalty, important aspects of Ghanaian heritage.
Logistics and financial support posed significant challenges for Ms Gharbin's attempt. Having started her trade in 2020, she believes that this achievement could serve as a platform for growing the craft industry and impacting the lives of Ghanaians. She expressed her intention to create more opportunities for artisans, collaborate with institutions, and push Ghanaian craftsmanship into the international market through exhibitions and partnerships.
Ms Gharbin advised Ghanaians to appreciate local artisans and patronize locally made handicrafts. She encouraged fellow artisans by stating that every dream set is achievable.
