Seven-Year-Old Pupil Dies After Swarm of Bees Attacks Anloga E.P Basic School

Anloga: A tragic incident struck Anloga Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Basic School in the Volta Region when a swarm of bees invaded the school compound, resulting in the death of a seven-year-old student and leaving three others in critical condition. According to Ghana News Agency, the chaos began when students were playing football and the ball became lodged in a tree. In an attempt to retrieve it, a stone was thrown, unintentionally disturbing a bee nest and triggering the attack. Mr. Thywill Deynu, the Headteacher of the school, disclosed that the bee attack heavily affected many students and teachers, especially the kindergarten pupils, who were unable to escape the swarm. "Four students were critically hurt and were rushed to the Keta Municipal Hospital for emergency treatment, while a seven-year-old girl was pronounced dead on arrival," he said. The Headteacher described the situation as devastating and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a promising young child. He commended the teachers for the ir quick response, which saved the majority of the children during the emergency. He described the deceased child as a vulnerable or special child who could not run or protect herself during the incident and suffered severe injuries that led to her death. "We quickly alerted the Fire Service personnel from Anloga district and they arrived promptly to control the bee swarm and secured the scene," he added. The school, with a population of over 400 students, saw the majority affected by the swarm, while preparations were underway for the Christmas vacation scheduled for the following day. The parents of the deceased child, who later declined to speak to the Ghana News Agency due to the distressing situation, urged the public to respect the privacy of the child and family during this difficult time. Some parents, teachers, and pupils expressed their devastation about the incident and urged authorities to address the problem of bee invasions on the school compound urgently. The body of the deceased child has b een deposited at the Keta Municipal Hospital mortuary for further examination and autopsy. Meanwhile, the injured pupils, all under the age of nine, are receiving medical treatment at the same hospital, with their conditions being closely monitored by health officials. GNA also gathered from some parents that the school authorities and the Ghana Education Service are reviewing various safety measures to prevent future bee-related incidents and ensure the safety of students at the school.
