Accra: The Ga East Municipal Assembly has disbursed funds and distributed essential items to Persons with Disability (PWDs) as part of its allocation under the District Assemblies' Common Fund (DACF). The presentation, held at the forecourt of the Assembly, was aimed at supporting the welfare and economic empowerment of PWDs to enhance their livelihoods and promote independent living.
According to Ghana News Agency, ten beneficiaries received deep freezers to support small-scale businesses, while one person received three sets of self-dish. Thirteen others were given various sums of money to support education, medical needs, and livelihood activities. Mr. Edmund Agboh, Municipal Chief Executive for Ga East, stated that the support aligned with Government policy requiring a portion of the DACF to be dedicated to improving the wellbeing of persons with disability.
Mr. Agboh emphasized that the support is a right and not a favor, underlining the Assembly's commitment to enabling persons with disability to lead dignified and independent lives. He urged beneficiaries to utilize the items and funds effectively, with the expectation that the support would lead to sustainable economic ventures.
Ms. Christine Osei-Bonsu, Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, affirmed the Assembly's dedication to transparency and inclusiveness in the DACF disbursement. She assured PWDs that their needs would continue to be prioritized in line with social protection policies and the Assembly's development agenda.
Mr. Bismarck Gyamfi, Ga East President of the Ghana Federation of Persons with Disability, expressed gratitude to the Assembly on behalf of the beneficiaries, noting the support as timely and impactful. He called for ongoing collaboration between the Assembly and disability groups to further inclusion and empowerment in the municipality.
