BoG Educates 250 Pupils on Currency as Part of Cedi’s 60th Anniversary Celebration

Accra: The Bank of Ghana (BoG) hosted an educational session for 250 pupils from Independence Avenue Basic School (1 and 2), St. George's Anglican Basic School, Bishop Mixed Basic School, Accra Sempe School, and St. Barnabas Basic School. The session was part of the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Cedi, themed '60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.'

According to Ghana News Agency, the Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Johnson Asiama, addressed the pupils, encouraging them to focus on their studies as they represent the future of the nation. He was joined by his deputies, Dr. Zakari Mumuni and Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, who shared their insights with the young attendees. The event concluded with music and lunch, marking a day dedicated to learning and national pride.

The adoption of the Cedi on July 19, 1965, marked Ghana's transition to economic independence from colonial rule. Over the years, the Cedi has been subject to numerous reforms and redesigns, serving as both a monetary tool and a symbol of resilience and progress. The 60th Anniversary celebration aims to enhance policy literacy, support the Bank's Clean Note Campaign, and inspire the younger generation to value and protect the Cedi's integrity.

The anniversary is not only a commemoration of the Cedi's evolution and its impact on national development but also an educational initiative to inform the public about currency usage, security features, and the significance of monetary policy.
