Accra: Germany will again support Ghana this year with more than £65 million (about GHS823 million) in development cooperation, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany has announced. He noted that the details of the support, which is subject to the approval of the German Bundestag, would be negotiated and finalized later this month. President Steinmeier made the announcement on Monday at a joint press conference with his host, Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama at the end of their bilateral talks at the Presidency in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, the German President arrived in Accra on Sunday evening for a three-day state visit to Ghana. President Steinmeier emphasized Germany's active involvement in training the younger generation in Ghana to help them find good jobs in sectors like health, pharmaceuticals, and the digital economy. He also highlighted efforts to improve energy efficiency and expand renewable energy, alongside agreements to hold regular high-level political consultations on issues of mutual interest.
President Steinmeier pointed out that Ghana is an important trading partner for Germany in Sub-Saharan Africa, a rapidly growing region. He mentioned that the trade volume between the two countries increased by over a quarter last year, reaching £626 million (nearly GHS8.3 billion). The German delegation, which includes representatives from major German companies, aims to explore investment opportunities in infrastructure, construction, and high technology sectors in Ghana.
Ghana is considered an attractive business location and a regional hub due to its well-educated population, English as the working language, and minimal time difference with Europe. The German President emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for Ghana's young population and expressed his interest in engaging with startup founders during his visit.
In addition to economic ties, science and research are central to the bilateral relations between Ghana and Germany. The two countries collaborate closely in vocational training to meet the demand for skilled labor. During his visit to Kumasi, President Steinmeier will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of a vocational training center and a nursing school, funded by Germany, which will educate 200 nurses annually for Ghana's healthcare system.
President John Dramani Mahama briefed President Steinmeier on Ghana's diplomatic efforts to foster dialogue and strengthen regional cooperation. He commended Germany's support for regional peace and development, highlighting Ghana's appointment of a Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahelian States to promote stability, cohesion, and integration in the region.
