Assembly Members Urge Municipal Status for Gomoa East District

Gomoa east: The Assembly members of the Gomoa East District in the Central Region have formally requested that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development elevate the district to a municipal status. This appeal, they argue, would facilitate enhanced development opportunities for the burgeoning population of over 309,000 residents. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Geoffrey Nkum, the Presiding Member of the Gomoa East Assembly, emphasized during a recent news conference that despite the district's significant population growth and a voting public exceeding 100,000, it is currently served by only 12 assembly members. Mr. Nkum urged the Electoral Commission and Local Government to create additional electoral areas to better extend development efforts throughout the communities. Mr. Nkum further highlighted concerns regarding a recently released list of districts slated for elevation to municipal status, noting that Gomoa East District, with its sizable population, was conspicuously absent. This om ission, he suggested, undermines the district's development potential. Adding to the call, Nana Addo II, the Gyasehene of Gomoa, stated in an interview that the district's large population and extensive land area pose challenges for the current assembly to adequately address development needs. He appealed directly to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to prioritize their request before the end of his term in office.
