NPP Parliamentary Caucus Moves to Recall Parliament Amidst Political Tensions

ACCRA: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Caucus is set to initiate a motion to recall Parliament, following an adjournment sine die by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. This development, announced by NPP Caucus Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, comes in the wake of what he describes as an unwarranted adjournment of the House, raising concerns about the functioning of parliamentary democracy in the country. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed dissatisfaction over Speaker Bagbin's decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely, asserting that there was no controversy justifying such a move. He emphasized the need for the Speaker to comply with court orders rather than resorting to indefinite adjournments, suggesting that the Speaker was acting in a manner that undermines parliamentary processes. Mr. Afenyo-Markin further accused Speaker Bagbin of supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus in obstructing parliamentary operations, thereby hin dering the government's ability to conduct major business before the upcoming elections. He alleged that this was a part of a deliberate strategy by the NDC to stall government functions, a plan he claimed had been anticipated by the NPP. Highlighting the NPP's intention to recall Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin noted that the majority caucus is prepared to confront what he described as attempts by Speaker Bagbin to disrupt parliamentary proceedings. He criticized the Speaker's actions as detrimental to democracy and suggested that the Speaker's allegiance to the NDC was influencing his conduct in Parliament. In response to these developments, the NPP Caucus has signaled its readiness to utilize legal mechanisms to ensure the continuation of parliamentary business and uphold democratic principles in the legislative process.
