ACCRA: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Ghana's Parliament has occupied seats traditionally reserved for the Majority, intensifying the existing tensions between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus. This development comes amid a series of legal disputes and political maneuvers as Parliament reconvenes for a crucial session. According to Ghana News Agency, last week, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant, affecting the constituencies of Amenfi Central, Fomena, Agona West, and Suhum. This decision followed a petition from NDC MP Haruna Iddrisu, who questioned the legitimacy of certain members remaining in Parliament after filing to contest future elections on different political tickets. The Speaker's ruling was based on Article 97(1)(g) of Ghana's Constitution, which mandates MPs to vacate their seats if they change parties or seek to remain as independents. However, the Supreme Court intervened, setting aside the Speaker's ruling, citing pot ential impacts on the democratic rights of the constituents. The court's decision effectively allows the MPs to continue their duties, pending further legal proceedings. The Speaker and the Attorney General have been instructed to file their statements within a week, as directed by a panel led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The NDC Caucus's actions have left the left side of the parliamentary floor vacant, escalating political friction. NPP Majority Leader Frank Annoh-Dompreh has expressed disapproval of the NDC's move and warned that the NPP will resist such attempts to assert control. Security measures in Parliament have been heightened, with thorough screenings for MPs and staff, restricted access to the public gallery, and controlled parking around the area to prevent congestion. This parliamentary standoff occurs at a pivotal moment for Ghana, as the nation prepares for the 2024 general election. The ongoing legal battles and political strategies have set a volatile stage, with both the NPP and N DC determined to gain the upper hand in the political arena.
