Employers Urged to Support Mental Health of Nursing Mothers with Better Workplace Environment

Tema: Dr. Augustine Quarshie, the Senior Physician and Head of Clinical Care at Tema General Hospital, emphasized the crucial role of a supportive workplace in enhancing the mental health and well-being of nursing mothers. He highlighted the importance of facilities such as lactation rooms, flexible schedules, and onsite nurseries during the Mental Health Day event held at the hospital. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Quarshie pointed out during his speech that creating a conducive working environment is essential for reducing absenteeism, increasing job satisfaction, and boosting productivity among nursing mothers. He stressed the benefits of a supportive workplace not only for the mothers and their babies but also for the overall company performance. The theme of this year's Mental Health Day at the hospital was "It is Time to Prioritise Mental Health at the Workplace." Dr. Quarshie lamented the rarity of companies providing dedicated nurseries that allow children to be cared for close to their mother s during work hours. He noted that the lack of such facilities often leads to decreased work output as employees struggle to balance the demands of motherhood with professional responsibilities. While acknowledging some positive developments, such as financial institutions beginning to establish nurseries, Dr. Quarshie called for more widespread implementation, especially in the health sector. He argued that more comprehensive support for nursing mothers is necessary to alleviate the challenges they face at work. The senior physician also advised companies to prioritize the mental health of all employees, not just physical health, emphasizing that mental well-being is paramount for maintaining a vibrant and productive workforce. He advocated for a systematic review of workplace interventions aimed at improving conditions for nursing mothers, suggesting that such measures are crucial for retaining talented women in the workforce.
