Accra: At least eight persons, including children and women, died and over 15 were injured when multiple landslides occurred amid heavy rains in the Mon district of India's north-eastern state of Nagaland on Sunday, a senior district official confirmed. While four dead bodies had been recovered, efforts were being made to find the other four. Those injured were admitted to a local hospital.
According to Ghana News Agency, heavy rains caused the landslides, leading to substantial destruction in the area. Mon district's Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak stated, "It is after many years that this area of Nagaland received so much rains. More than 40 houses have been washed away. We are still assessing the extent of damages caused."
The landslides reportedly began at around 6 a.m. and persisted throughout the day, exacerbating the situation in the region. Meanwhile, inclement weather continued to affect parts of Nagaland on Sunday, complicating rescue efforts and assessment of the damages.
