Kumasi: A fire outbreak at Suame Magazine Zone 18 near the garages in Kumasi has resulted in the death of a 70-year-old woman and caused the destruction of several properties.
According to Ghana Web, the incident was reported by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on May 17, 2026.
The deceased, identified as Bawama Naya, was reportedly trapped during the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026. Officials from the Ashanti Regional Command of the GNFS indicated that the fire damaged multiple properties, including wooden structures, metal containers, vehicles, and vehicle engines.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Fire Service mentioned that the Breman Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 0322 GMT about the fire involving structures, vehicles, and spare parts in the area. A joint firefighting team from the Breman and Komfo Anokye fire stations was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the team found a fully developed fire engulfing three wooden structures, three metal containers, four vehicles, and nine DAF vehicle engines. Firefighters utilized both offensive and defensive strategies to manage the blaze, bringing it under control at about 0359 GMT and fully extinguished by 0451 GMT using water and foam.
The body of Bawama Naya was subsequently handed over to officers from the Suame District Police Command for preservation and further investigation. The GNFS also reported that firefighters managed to save three sprinter buses, one Smiling Benz bus, and one Opanka bus from the fire. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire outbreak.
