An young African, Aburof M. Kushtain from Ghana has celebrated the birthday of His Royal Majesty, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu?izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan of Brunei.

He celebrated him with a painting artwork and a dedicated branded book through the “Hero Book Project” which is dedicated to celebrating great personalities who have humanity at heart.

Brother Kushtain, a motivational speaker and anti-drug abuse campaigner said the Sultan needs to be celebrated for transforming Brunei and its people.

He further noted that most of the time, the media does not highlight the impact the Sultan is making on his people and the continuous contribution he is making on the world stage.

He said the narrative has always been one-sided.

He believes people must know his great works, most especially young people across the world.

His Royal Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu?izzaddin is one such great leader who cares about his people and the betterment of the world.

One of Ghana’s finest Pan African Art Ambassadors, and a Special Envoy to the United Nations Youth Association – Ghana, Amb. Dr. Prince Kojo-Hilton said the portrait painting is monumental and a generational gift to the Sultan because it will be kept in the museum for people of Brunei to know that the love for His Royal Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu?izzaddin Waddaulah Sultan of Brunei goes beyond the barriers of Brunei.

The portrait would also inspire the next generation of Brunei youth to keep his love in their hearts.

The morning host, Mohammed Jahma of Baina TV, a Ghanaian-based TV station asked brother Kushtain whether he sent the gift. Brother Kush-tain said the organization sent the artwork through DHL on the 4th July 2022 and it arrived in Brunei on 11th July 2022. It was received by HJH FAIZA and AZUIMAN.

“We are hoping that we would get a response from His Royal Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu?izzaddin Waddaulah Sultan of Brunei very soon.”

We’re a proud ‘toilet government’ tag – NPP communicator

A member of the communications team of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the party is proud of the ‘toilet government’ tag slapped on it by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to the government communicator, it is no mean feat for the party to be tagged in this manner stemming from the work it is doing to eradicate open defecation.

“This is all because of the work the party is doing in the provision of some toilet facilities across the country,” he said.

Mr Kafui Amegah made this admission while speaking on the discussion segment of the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Odehyieba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM on Tuesday, December 13, 2022.

He added that in 2014, scores of Ghanaians died as a result of the outbreak of cholera in the country.

“This happened under the watch of former president John Dramani Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration,” he said.

According to him, “not too long ago in cosmopolitan Accra, scores of people died as a result of the outbreak of cholera in Chorkor and its environs”.

“This government has taken the provision of toilet facilities a notch higher to help end open defecation in the country,” he added.

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the guest speaker at the opening ceremony of the ‘All Systems Go Forum’ organised by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, also indicated that the government has shown its commitment to addressing the water and sanitation needs of Ghanaians while meeting the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs).

He noted that Ghana has achieved very significant gains in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the past six years by ensuring greater access for millions of Ghanaians to safe drinking water and toilet facilities.

Quoting the 2021 Population and Housing census report, he said access to toilet facilities by the population has increased from 33% to 59% while access to basic drinking water has increased from 79% in 2018 to 87.7% in 2021.

He also stated that there has also not been a single recorded case of cholera in the last five years.

To this end, he thanked Sanitation and Water Resources Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah for her “excellent stewardship of the sector.”

How did ‘jobless small boy’ Sammy Gyamfi build house at Airport Hills? – George Opare Addo quizzes

George Opare Addo, the retained National Youth Organizer of the NDC says the party’s National Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi is living an affluent life.

He is questioning the source of Sammy Gyamfi’s wealth who he claims has built a house at Airport Hills in Accra.

Opare Addo affectionately called Pablo also claimed Sammy Gyamfi is jobless but living rich.

In an interview with Mugabe Maase, he said, “Mugabe (referring to the host), ask Sammy Gyamfi how he built a house at Airport Hills, what work does he do?”

The re-elected National Youth Organizer, George Opare Addo who faced stiff competition from Yaw Brogya Genfi, who was backed by the party’s Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi, has been lamenting what he described as “injustice” he suffered during the election period.

According to him, the whole competition was about Sammy Gyamfi, not the candidate himself.

“As for this election, it was that Airport Hills small boy I contested not Brogya, I said today I will mention names… I contested Sammy Gyamfi and I won.

“He is a small boy. There is nothing he can match me on. I have lived life well. He is a small boy,” he said in an interview with Mugabe Maase.

According to him, the party’s spokesperson who has been a torn in his flesh schemed against him.

He has vowed to crash Sammy Gyamfi should he crisscross his path as he did in his first term.

“Yes, Sammy Gyamfi has now become an obstacle in my way and this is my second term I will not joke! I will cut away anybody who stands in my way as an obstacle. It is only action that we will see. Action action action,” Mr. Opare Addo warned.

Pablo, as he is affectionately called, narrated the root cause of their disagreement, indicating that he had earlier reached out to Sammy Gyamfi for a collaborative project but he turned it down.

“I called him twice for us to meet at my Dzorwulu office, ask him. He was at peace FM. I called him to come for us to sit and talk so that we can work together. So what is my crime?” he asked.

He further revealed, “I told him (Sammy Gyamfi) that the situation where he passes the other way when I pass one way will not help the party and I want is to work together to bring NDC to power, ask him if I am lying.”

Full text: Ken Ofori-Atta’s speech on Staff Level Agreement for $3billion IMF programme

I will like to first of all thank the almighty God for providing the needed guidance to the GoG and the Fund to get us where we are today.

ii. I will also like thank HE the President for his leadership and direction throughout this period;

iii. Let me also express appreciation to the IMF in general and in particular the IMF MD and management, Stephane Roudet, IMF Mission Chief to Ghana and Leo Medina, and the indomitable spirit of the team for their commitment to Ghana during these challenging times;

iv. In addition, I will like to express appreciation to key stakeholders including Cabinet, Parliament, FBOs, CSOs, and members of Academia, for their invaluable contributions to the preparation of the Post-Covid-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG) which has underpinned the IMF Programme negotiations; and

v. Last but not the least I will like to express my sincere appreciation to the staff of MoF and BoG’s leadership under Governor Addison and the trusted Deputies for their hard work and sacrifices throughout this entire process.

Context

i. A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes for almost 6 months when Government formally announced its intention to engage the IMF for an IMF-supported programme, to enable us reach this Staff Level Agreement (SLA) today which paves the way for the IMF’s Management and Executive Board to approve Ghana’s programme request early next year.

ii. Since the announcement on 1st July, 2022 to formally engage the IMF for an IMF-supported Programme, there have been three rounds of negotiations with the IMF interspersed with a number of virtual meetings in-between to ensure both the GoG and the IMF teams work around the clock to get the SLA by end Dec 2022.

iii. Against the backdrop of Staff Programmes, Ghana is indeed blessed to conclude our SLA within 5 months. This is historic in recent times relative to what we witnessed with Zambia, Chad and Ethiopia.

The IMF Programme

i. The GoG and the IMF teams have worked tirelessly to agree on key aspects of the IMF Programme at the Staff Level.

ii. Key deliverables over the period include:

a) Preparation of the Post-Covid-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG);

b) A Medium-term macroeconomic framework;

c) Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) and Debt Management Strategy;

d) Structural reforms to address structural bottlenecks, improve competitiveness and promote efficiency and effectiveness;

e) A Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies (MEFP); and

f) An Agreement on Prior Actions which are expected to be completed before the Fund goes to the Board.

iii. Ghana stands ready to complete all Prior Actions before the end-March 2023 but more importantly, Ghana is committed to the IMF Programme as a whole.

The SLA is only one aspect of the approval process. More is yet to be done to secure IMF Management and Board approval. That notwithstanding:

i. Key fiscal measures, structural reforms, and the medium-term macro-fiscal framework in the 2023 Budget are aligned with the IMF-supported Programme. It is therefore crucial that we receive support from all stakeholders including:

a) Parliament to ensure that the 2023 budget including all revenue measures are passed; and

b) Creditors to ensure a successful debt operation

Truly, the eventual conclusion of the program will assist us in our efforts to restore stability, tackle inflation, and strengthen our currency.

That is why the various ingredients of the program should be supported by all Ghanaians and all stakeholders.

We can only get to the IMF Board if we get sufficient commitment from our creditors in support of the debt operation.

i. The 2023 Budget is anchored on increasing domestic revenue mobilization effort by 1.2 percentage points of GDP. On the expenditure side, the 2023 Budget proposes to reduce expenditures (on commitment basis) by about 2 percentage points of GDP from 2022 to 2023. Primary expenditures are expected to be reduced through a reduction in allocation on the Use of Good and Services and Domestically Financed Captial expenditure on a commitment basis.

ii. These fiscal adjustments alone are not enough to address the country’s economic challenges, hence the ongoing debt restructuring aimed at restoring debt sustainability in the medium-term.

iii. The 2023 Budget contains important social protection measures to support the most vulnerable including measures that seek to gradually increase the number of beneficiary households as well as the value cash transfers under the LEAP. Other social protection programmes which will be prioritised under the programmes include the NHIS, the Capitation Grant, and the School Feeding Programme.

Concluding Remarks

iv. We are optimistic that the 2023 Budget adjustment strikes the right balance between determination and pragmatism.

v. Already, the economy is responding positively to the news of GoG and the IMF reaching an SLA and we are eager to leverage this momentum to the very moment when the IMF Executive Board approves the Programme request. We are already seeing significant improvements in the exchange rate with the Ghana cedi recovering against major currencies.

vi. We hope that Ghanaians will continue to support all efforts to restore macroeconomic stability and promote robust and inclusive growth.

vii. We are confident as a resilient people, and we shall rally to support this great enterprise, to restore macroeconomic stability and promote robust and inclusive growth. The world is looking at us, and I know we can do it.

viii. To God indeed be the glory for the great thing he hath done within 5 months. I am certain that God who began the good work will continue until it is finally finished – Greater things He will do. For we shall gather the harvest with joy.

ix. These indeed are both times for a Joseph recovery and a Nehemiah rebuilding

x. Let us continue with courage, the spirit of love for each other and self-discipline to go through this together.

xi. Thank you and God Bless.

Covid-19: Ashanti targets 165,831 in 5th round of vaccination campaign

Kumasi, Dec. 13, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate is seeking to vaccinate 165,831 people in the 5th National COVID-19 Vaccination exercise scheduled for December 14 to December 18, 2022.

Vaccination teams made up of 2,013 vaccinators are expected to be deployed across all 43 districts in the region to undertake the exercise.

Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang, the Regional Director of Health Services told the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi that the exercise would target partially vaccinated and unvaccinated persons aged 15 and above.

He said pregnant women were also eligible to take the vaccines which were safe and efficacious, adding that, it was the surest way to prevent people from getting critically ill in the event of an infection.

The Regional Director indicated that it was important to embark on the exercise to boost the immune systems of the population as the festive season approaches.

He said large gatherings and outdoor events by revellers during the yuletide could potentially spark another wave of the viral disease hence the need to be proactive in the protection of the public.

The exercise, he said, would be repeated in early 2023 to reduce the risk of transmission, having brought it under control most part of the year.

He called on those partially vaccinated and those yet to receive the first dose to make it a priority to avail themselves during the exercise.

Health stakeholders to build trusted partnership for effective NCDs healthcare

Accra, Dec. 13, GNA -Stakeholders in health have been called upon to build trusted partnership to work towards effective non-communicable diseases (NCDs) services at the primary healthcare level to help attain the universal health coverage.

Dr. Anarfi Asamoah-Baah, former Deputy Director-General of the WHO and Presidential Coordinator for Ghana’s COVID-19 Response made the call at a two-day 5th National High-Level Meeting on NCDs in Accra.

The meeting was on the theme: “Investing in NCD Service Delivery at Primary Healthcare Level to Achieve Universal Health Coverage.” and was held in line with the National Health Policy, National NCD Policy, and the National NCD Strategy.

It was organised by the Ghana NCD Alliance (GhNCDA) and the Private Health Sector Alliance – Ghana (PHSAG) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH), Ghana Health Service (GHS), and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

It was sponsored by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Gmbh on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (bmz), Ghana Hearth Initiative (GHI), the World Vision International (WVI), Medtronic LABS and PATH.

Dr Asamoah-Baah urged the health sectors to adopt the same spirit in the COVID-19 pandemic by developing business opportunities towards the NCDs crisis in Ghana.

“One of the developments in our COVID response was how the private sector saw the crisis as an opportunity. The best example is how the private laboratory system was expanded and of cost the famous frontier company at the Airport.

“Private hospitals overnight became treatment centres. People make business out of nose masks, sanitizers, veronica buckets, thermometers, private funeral homes saw it as an opportunity to make money and overnight our families and friends became the suppliers of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs),” he stated.

He added: “So my main point is that you should not see the NCD crisis as just a crisis but also an important business opportunity.”

Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, the Chairperson of GhNCDA in a welcoming address said the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provided a shared responsibility in promoting global peace and prosperity through the provision of universal health coverage and that this challenges all State, and non-state actors, to facilitate unhindered access to healthcare delivery services devoid of all financial constraints, for all.

“Achieving unhindered access to healthcare services devoid of all financial challenges, imposed a huge responsibility on the Alliance and the private sector, to actualize the national NCD strategy designed to secure a significant reduction in Ghana’s dual burden of communicable, and non-communicable diseases,” she stated.

She said the theme for the meeting directly feeds and reflect our primary national response to end the NCD epidemic locally, adding that; “May I hasten to state that achieving the ‘health for all’ target cannot be achieved, and should not be pursued in isolation.”

Dr Wiafe Addai said strategies evolved towards the attainment of that noble goal should be linked up to the total attainment of all the other 16 goals, with a direct bearing on the Alliance’s critical mission to drive down the mind-boggling statistics on noncommunicable diseases.

She said the new wave of noncommunicable diseases reported to our ill-equipped healthcare facilities imposed a much heavier duty on us all to integrate our collective efforts for a robust national response to the menace.

The main brain behind creating the National High-Level platform, the Chairperson said was to elevate or bring to the fore the NCD challenge for national visibility and for appropriate national response.

“The event and the activities of the Ghana NCD Alliance over the past years has helped in putting the spotlight on NCDs in Ghana. It has created some level of awareness and given some policy directions on NCDs.

“The expectation of the GhNCDA is to ensure that government owns and institutionalise the National High-Level Meeting on NCDs for it to gain the much more needed attention. I daresay we risk a spike in NCD statistics if policy makers and healthcare institutions fail to prioritize the conditions and extend the needed care to afflicted patients,” she stated.

Dr Wiafe Addai said it was important to highlight the rising cases of obesity and overweight in Ghanaian children especially those in the private/international schools, stating: “This if not checked will increase the NCD burden in the future generations.

“The Alliance has taken the lead and will request for support of partners here to join us to plan towards reducing the rate at which obesity is rising among our kids. The Alliance is apprehensive NCDs could spiral out of control, and push same to the precipice, the tipping end, if we look back, having put our shoulders to the wheel.”

Dr Wiafe Addai appealed to blue chip companies and high net worth individuals to rally behind the Alliance and give them the needed financial muscle to maintain and improve on gains recorded on patients with stroke, hypertension, some cancers and diabetes.

GIZ closeout national COVID-19 vaccination campaign with health screening funfair

Accra, Dec. 13, GNA -The German Cooperation (GIZ) has held a public health screening funfair to officially mark the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign closeout.

The joint campaign, in collaboration with the African German Health Association and the Ghana Health Service. was to generate interest and increase COVID-19 vaccination uptake amongst the public.

It also sought to dispel the misconceptions about the COVID-19 vaccines to reduce vaccine hesitancy.

The funfair was marked by health screening, counselling sessions, drama performances, among others.

According to the World Health Organisation, vaccines remain the most important tool for countries to overcome the pandemic and to get on the path to recovery, towards socio-economic development.

Ms Ariane von Maercker, Co-lead Support to the Local Vaccine Production and Responsible for the German’s Last Mile Initiative, said despite the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine, there were still widespread misconceptions on the COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccination, hence the campaign.

She said the national campaign as part of the German Last Mile Initiative sought to rapidly increase global COVID-19 vaccine coverage and uptake.

Ms Maercker noted that Germany provided 224 million EUR for bilateral projects worldwide and direct support vaccination campaigns and overall, more than 1.3 billion EUR was made available in 2022, to help end the pandemic.

She stated that as part of the closeout ceremony, GIZ Ghana donated several laptops, desktops, tablets, printers, and cameras to the Ghana Health Service.

“The equipment is intended to strengthen the use of digital health information system, help to detect people infected with COVID-19, to ensure that they receive the best treatment and to follow-up with their contact persons.” Ms Maercker said.

Dr Aboagye Dacosta, the Director of Health Promotion, Ghana Health Service, said from July to September 2022, partners of the campaign have worked closely to increase public awareness on the importance of COVID-19 vaccination.

Ghana over the three-month campaign period, has exceeded the national target of vaccinating 20 million people to 21 million as of November 2022.

“As of November 25, a total of 21, 163,810 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered and at least 12,155,754 tonnes, representing 38 per cent of the population have received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” he added.

National COVID-19 vaccination: hard-to-reach vulnerable should be targeted

Bolgatanga, Dec. 13, GNA – The Rural Initiatives for Self-Empowerment Ghana (RISE-Ghana), a Non- Governmental Organisation, has underscored the need for a deliberate effort to target vulnerable groups in the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

The Ghana Health Service in collaboration with its development partners would from December 14 to 18, December embark on a national campaign to encourage Ghanaians to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 on the theme, “protect yourself, protect your family, get vaccinated against COVID-19”.

In a statement, signed and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga by Mr Ahmed Awal Kariama, Executive Director, RISE-Ghana, said all stakeholders needed to work to demystify all misconceptions creating hesitancy and encourage minority groups to be vaccinated to boost their immunity against the virus and help defeat it.

“We urge Ghanaian media, Civil Society Organization (CSOs), the Ghana Health Service and other stakeholders to deliberately seek out and advocate for the targeting of minor, migrant, hard-to-reach, vaccine hesitant populations and especially immigrants fleeing terrorist attacks and taking refuge in parts of the Upper East and Upper West Regions to ensure targets on herd immunity, protecting lives and livelihoods and advancing the SDGs were met.” It said.

According to the statement as of December 9, this year, there were 643,875,406 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 6,630,082 deaths were reported globally by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“Currently, more than nine million people in Africa have contracted the COVID-19 virus”. It said.

“In Ghana, from January 3, 2020 to December 9, 2022, there have been 171,023 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,461 deaths, reported to WHO and as of 27 November, 2022, a total of 20,869,800 vaccine doses have been administered,” it added.

The statement said the campaign was timely and had huge potential to rally around communities and strengthen vaccine confidence and accountability at the individual and family levels.

“Building on RISE-Ghana’s extensive experience in health systems strengthening, health promotion and maternal advocacy in partnership with UNICEF-Ghana’s Social and Behavior Change (SBC) and Health Sections and the Gender Rights and Empowerment Programme led by the STAR Ghana foundation with funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, RISE-Ghana commended the Ghana Health Service and its Partners notably UNICEF-Ghana for the innovative and compelling vaccination campaigns over the years which ensured every family and every child was reached.

“Even though Ghana has an enviable record in essential vaccines immunization coverage of 90 percent, current skeptism, denial and threats of rejection of COVID-19 vaccines are rife and will derail efforts to SUSTAIN the gains from herd immunity,” It stated.

“We must act decisively and urgently to end COVID-19 and get back our normal lives, it starts with you,” it added.
