Gabon scores late to spoil Ghana party

A late equalizer from substitute Jim Allevinah has seen Gabon stopping Ghana from celebrating a first win at the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The Black Stars last Monday faced off with the Atlas Lions of Morocco in the first Group C game of the tournament.

With that setback, there was pressure on Ghana to return to action today to fight for a win against Round 2 opponent Gabon.

In a game played at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Andre Ayew scored with a fantastic effort in the 18th minute after an assist from Thomas Partey to shoot Ghana into a deserved lead.

While both teams will push to equalize in the remainder of the first half, neither side managed as the teams went into the break with just the one goal in it.

Later in the second half, it was all action but Ghana held on until the last 10 minutes of the game when pressure from Gabon paid off.

Gabon winger Jim Allevinah who was introduced in the second half scored with a fine left-foot shot to break Ghanaian hearts.

The draw today means Ghana has just a point in Group C and remains 3rd on the log.

The Black Stars must now beat their Comoros counterpart in the final group game to stand any chance of progressing to the knockout stage of the 2021 AFCON.

2021/22 GPL Week 13: King Faisal’s title aspirations suffer major setback after defeat to Karela

King Faisal have suffered a 2-0 defeat to Karela United this afternoon after an unimpressive showing at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Kumasi-based club commenced the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season with consistent fine displays.

However, after losing form in the last few matches, the team is now gradually losing the chance to eventually emerge as champions of the Ghanaian top-flight league.

Today, King Faisal had the chance to close the gap on league leader Asante Kotoko when the team faced off with Karela United.

Unfortunately for the Inshallah boys, they were overpowered by the opponent. The visitors scored twice through Umar Bashir this afternoon to cruise to an important 2-0 win at the end of the 90 minutes.

The win has pushed Karela United to 8th on the Ghana Premier League table with King Faisal now three points behind Asante Kotoko. The Porcupine Warriors also have two outstanding matches and could stretch the gap at the top if the team picks maximum points from the games.

Chips, fried chicken top Accra’s food delivery list in 2021 according to Bolt Food

With a world of choice at their fingertips, potato chips and chicken are the first and second go-to choices respectively for home food deliveries on the Bolt Food App in 2021. KFC was also the most popular restaurant among food delivery customers in the bustling city of Accra.

Chips were ordered on the Bolt Food app over 110 000 times, while the largest order value could be estimated to be about GHS10,000! With most city residents turning to delivery services rather than waiting in queues in stores, most food delivery orders are placed in the afternoons, during lunchtime.

This is according to Bolt Food, which celebrated its first anniversary of offering its affordable delivery services to Accra’s citizens.

Bolt Food since its introduction in Ghana in 2020 has been leading the food delivery service and is aimed at improving lives and providing convenience when it comes to getting food delivered at the comfort of customers’ homes or offices without joining a queue at your favorite food joint.

The first of its kind, Bolt Food is dedicated to bridging the gap between restaurants, eateries, and their customers and to helping food partners improve on their customer service delivery.

Ali Zaryab, Country Manager, Bolt Food, Ghana notes that: “At Bolt Food, we are always looking for innovative ways to work with our restaurant partners to serve our customers better.”

“After one year on the Ghanaian market, we can proudly say that we have exceeded expectations and even in the face of the global pandemic we remained committed to answering the pressing needs of most of our customers who are looking to have their favorite meals delivered to them on time and at the comfort of their homes and offices,” Ali Zaryab added.

Using Bolt Food to receive and process orders means that restaurants do not have to be concerned with managing payments via credit card or cash, as all payments are processed through the app, before being paid directly to the business.
Restaurant staff are also saved from contact with members of the broader public and only need to engage with Bolt Food couriers, who have been trained in physical distancing protocols, to hand over meals.

Alphonso Davies: Bayern Munich defender diagnosed with mild myocarditis

Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies has stopped training after the club detected signs of heart muscle inflammation.

The Canadian, 21, has not played since 17 December after contracting Covid-19.

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann said a mild sign of myocarditis was discovered after Davies returned to training.

“During our follow-up examination that we do with every player that has had Covid-19, we detected signs of mild myocarditis,” said Nagelsmann.

“He has stopped training for now, so he won’t be available to us for the next weeks.”

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle which can reduce the heart’s ability to pump blood and can cause rapid or irregular heart rhythms.

Davies has made 107 appearances for Bayern since signing from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018, helping them win three Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020.

“This myocarditis isn’t too dramatic based on the ultrasound, but more simply signs of an inflammation. Nevertheless, it needs to heal and that will no doubt take some time,” said Nagelsmann.

On 5 January Bayern said Davies was doing “well” after testing positive for Covid.

Nine Bayern players tested positive at the start of January after time away following the Bundesliga’s winter break.

Amoh and two other accomplices, whose names were given as Black and Wale, both at large, sold a broken floor tile to Mr Bright Krampah, the complainant as an Infinix mobile phone.

He said Amoh and his two friends under the guise of selling phones approached the complainant who had just arrived from Obuasi.

He said Mr Krampah, upon seeing the fake phone, held on to Wale and raised an alarm but Wale managed to escape.

Prosecution said Black then told complainant to give him GHC30.00 to assist him trace Wale but he also bolted after taking the money.

Chief Inspector Annobil said the complainant upon suspecting that Amoh could also abscond, held on to him and he promised to help the complainant find Wale and Black.

Pan-African payment, settlement system launched by President Akufo-Addo foreseeing $5 billion annual savings for Africa

Ghana President H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, represented by the Vice President H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia today in Accra, hosted and presided over the commercial launch of the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), observing that the ground-breaking platform will save Africa more than US$5 billion annually in payment transaction costs, while it plays an increasingly significant role in accelerating the continent’s transactions underpinning the operationalization of the AfCFTA.

President Nana Akufo-Addo complimented Afreximbank and AfCFTA Secretariat for the establishment of the payment system citing PAPSS as a major leap in releasing the continent from overdependence on external players and factors in achieving a long yearned-for acceleration in intra-continental trade and investment.

“This launch is a result of many months of hard work, resolve, and commitment towards achieving set objectives for the growth of the continent in trade. All Central Banks in Africa must now join up and ensure seamless transfer of funds deploying this most practical and important African solution to an African problem,” added President Nana Akufo-Addo. He commented on the pan-African significance of Ghana hosting the event as a harbinger of the hard-won struggle for economic self-determination following the political decolonization of the continent over 60 years ago.

PAPSS, developed by African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), by transforming and facilitating payment, clearing, and settlement for cross-border trade across Africa.

Prof. Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, said in his remarks: “We are eager to build upon the African Continental Free Trade Area’s creation of a single market throughout Africa, and PAPSS provides the state-of-the-art financial market infrastructure connecting African markets to each other thereby enabling instant cross-border payments in respective local African currencies for cross-border trade.

Afreximbank as the main Settlement Agent for PAPSS, provides settlement guarantees on the payment system and overdraft facilities to all settlement agents, in partnership with Africa’s participating Central Banks. PAPSS will effectively eliminate Africa’s financial borders, formalize and integrate Africa’s payment systems, and play a major role in facilitating and accelerating the huge AfCFTA-induced growth curve in intra-African trade.”

The PAPSS launch event was graced by the presence of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the IAFTA Advisory Council, and H.E Mahamadou Issoufou – former President of Republic of Niger who is acknowledged as a champion in driving the establishment of the AfCTA Initiative.

H.E Issoufou lauded the far-reaching vision and determination of African leaders in establishing the world’s largest free trade area.

Featuring presentations by H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General AfCFTA Secretariat; Godwin Emefiele, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, and Chairman PAPSS Governing Council, the launch was witnessed by representatives of the Presidents of Egypt and Uganda (and DRC representing Chair of AUC) who proferred their respective congratulations and support for the launch of PAPSS, a potential game-changer in Africa’s economic destiny.

In his presentation, PAPSS CEO Mr. Mike Ogbalu emphasized that the payment system is not designed to compete with or replace existing payment systems, but to facilitate the connectivity level that brings all payments systems together into one network that is interoperable, efficient, and affordable.

“PAPSS is designed to make our currencies regain value to domesticate intra-Africa payments in this journey towards African prosperity while providing the superhighway which connects others to reach every part of this continent as we seek to create the Africa that We Want.”

On his part, the AfCFTA Secretary-General H.E Wamkele Mene appreciated the role and commitment of the Continent’s Heads of States and Governments through the African Union, saying that their strong political will, continues to be the bedrock of progress towards a full implementation of AfCFTA that has now been strongly boosted with the commercial launch of the PAPSS.

According to Afreximbank, PAPSS provides the solution to the disconnected and fragmented nature of payment and settlement systems that have long impeded intra-African trade. Prior to PAPSS, over 80 percent of African cross-border payment transactions originating from African banks had to be routed offshore for clearing and settlement using international banking relationships.

That posed multiple challenges, ranging from payment delays to operational inefficiencies and compliance concerns for the disparate regional payment systems.

PAPSS, which has been successfully piloted in the six countries of the West African Monetary Zone, delivers multiple advantages and efficiencies to intra-African trade payments, including:

1. Reducing the cost, duration, and time variability of cross-border payments across Africa;

2. Decreasing the liquidity requirements of commercial banks for cross-border payments; and

3. Strengthening oversight of cross-border payment systems by central banks.

PAPSS is also set to deliver harmonization across the continent through its comprehensive legal, regulatory and operational framework comprising standardized rules, formats, and governance arrangements, harmonized Know-Your-Customer and Anti-Money Laundering procedures, payment confirmation, and settlement finality. A precondition for participation in PAPSS is compliance with its set rules and standards.
