2022 World Cup: They are confused – ExCO member defends Black Stars technical team decision not to release squad

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Samuel Anim Addo, has defended the decision of the Black Stars technical team not to release the squad for the 2022 World Cup playoff game against Nigeria.

With barely a week to the big game against the Super Eagles, the Black Stars squad is still yet to be released by Otto Addo, who is the head coach of the team.

This has led to criticism from some quarters, but reacting to the development, Anim Addo believes Nigeria will not have enough time to map out a plan against Ghana by the time the squad is released.

According to him, the players who have been handed call-ups have been individually informed, whilst suggesting that not making the squad public will confuse Nigeria.

“Strategically, we must keep our opponents confused and they are confused and the time that they will need to regroup and organise themselves to know what our strengths are, will be limited,” he said on Citi TV.

“The players who have been selected know they are travelling and are already preparing for the game.

“The most important thing is that you will get Ghanaians who are going to die for the country.”

Ghana will host the Super Eagles at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi before travelling to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja for the return fixture.

The first leg is scheduled for Friday, March 25, 2022, while the second leg will take place on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.

Nigeria has played against Ghana more than any other country in the world in football, with a total of 57 senior matches between both countries in 71 years.

Ghana has won 19 of those clashes with Nigeria winning 16, with 19 of the games ending in a draw.

The two teams most recent encounter ended in a 0-0 in Accra with the Eagles winning 3-0 in Port Harcourt to qualify for the 2002 finals in Korea/Japan.

Ghana and Nigeria have clashed in qualifying campaigns for the 1962, 1970, 1974, and 2002 World Cup finals.
