Male candidates dominate BECE in Northern Region

Tamale,– Statistics from the Northern Regional Educational Directorate indicate that male candidates outnumbered their female counterparts in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Out of the 30,468 candidates writing the exams from 657 schools, 16,517 are boys and 13,951 are girls.

This was revealed when Mr Sule Salifu, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) toured some BECE centres in the Tamale Metropolis to interact with the candidates and wish them well in the examination.

He was accompanied by Mr Amatus D. Tug-uu, the Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education.

Mr Salifu encouraged the candidates to put in more effort to perform well in the examination to enable them to enjoy the Free Senior High School education.

He called on teachers, parents, and guardians to continue to assist the candidates throughout the exams period to help build their confidence to successfully pass the BECE.

The MCE further urged invigilators to be vigilant to prevent the students from engaging in any examination malpractices.

The Tamale MCE advised the invigilators not to put fear in the candidates and urged them to do their work diligently.

Mr Tug-uu shared some experiences with the candidates and urged them to comport themselves and avoid examination malpractices.

Twenty Pregnant girls write BECE in Effutu Municipality

©Winneba (C/R),- More than 20 pregnant girls are among a total of 1,758 candidates writing the exams at centers ‘A’ and ‘B’ in Winneba.

The total number of candidates are from 722 Public and 728 Private schools are made up of 876 boys and 882 girls in the Effutu Municipality.

Center “A” at the central campus of the University of Education Winneba, 570 of the expected 574 candidates were present, while two of the 1,184 at center “B” at the Winneba Senior High Schoo were absent.

The Supervisors at the two centers could not assign reasons for the absentee candidates.

The GNA gathered that the Social Studies papers, the first paper for the day in a sack could not be opened and this delayed the commencement of the paper for about 40 minutes.

Alhaji Zubeiru Kasim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, had earlier toured the centres and urged the candidates not to entertain fears, but to write the exams with confidence to come out with flying colors to enable them to enjoy the free Senior High School policy of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He announced that the Effutu Municipal Assembly together with the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin have all put in place incentives to support students who will excel in the BECE to pursue secondary education.

Mrs Judith Mabel Micah, Effutu Municipal Director of Education advised the candidates not to misconduct themselves or carry any foreign materials into the exam room.

She further called on them to do everything possible to give the municipality the best results by performing well to enjoy the scholarship packages the assembly in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for the area had put in place.

Mr Ebenezer Kojo Otoo, the 2021 National best test teacher, a tutor at the Winneba Senior High School also encouraged them to do their best as the overall best candidate will be honoured through the hall of fame.

He urged them to write and pass well to be admitted in first-class schools in the country.

Mrs Martha Owusu Agyapon, Central Regional Education Director, visited the various districts in Winneba and also interacted with children.

We won against South Africa but we have to improve – Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac

Ghana coach, Milovan Rajevac, has called for improvement from his players after booking a place in the playoffs of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

After a shaky start of the qualifiers, the Black Stars recorded a hard-fought win over South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium in the matchday 6 games of the final round of qualifiers.

With the playoffs scheduled for March 2022, the Serbian has called on his players to improve.

According to Rajevac, the competition would get tougher at the next stage hence the need to ensure that, all errors and weaknesses in the team were corrected before they take on their next opponents.

He, however, commended the playing body for working hard to secure the much-needed victory for the team.

“We expected the tough nature of the game and we prepared for it and ensured we delivered.

“We created a lot of chances and could have scored more in the game, but the most important thing is that we have won and we would plan to improve more,” he added.

The Black Stars would wait for the next phase of the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

We are positioned to provide services as a Regional Hospital

Hohoe (V/R),- Mr Charles Torkornoo, Head of Administration, Hohoe Municipal Hospital, has revealed that the Hospital was well-positioned to provide services that as a Regional Hospital in health service delivery.

He said more than 15 health officers had been posted to the facility to begin their “house job” in line with the upgrade of the facility adding that more doctors and specialists would be posted to the Hospital.

“Trafalgar now has been upgraded into a Teaching Hospital so the Minister of Health has designated this Hospital (Hohoe Municipal Hospital) as the new Volta Regional Hospital” and upgrading works are still ongoing.

Mr Torkornoo speaking to the media during a presentation of medical and hospital consumables by the Revival Assemblies of God Church in Hohoe to the Hospital appealed to the government to speed up with the upgrading to enable citizens to appreciate what they started.

He said some infrastructural needs were promised with plans to put up some important facilities such as an Accident and Emergency Centre as part of the upgrading programme.

Mr Torkornoo said they hoped the programme would be done soon so they would enjoy the status of a Regional Hospital while expressing gratitude to the health minister for the “bold decision”.

Vivo Energy Ghana appoints Kader Maiga as Managing Director

Vivo Energy Ghana, the marketer and distributor of Shell-branded fuels and lubricants has appointed Kader Maiga as its new Managing Director following Ben Hassan Ouattara’s end of tenure.

Mr. Maiga comes on board with over 20 years of experience in the energy sector, including senior management positions with Shell and Vivo Energy.

He holds a Master’s degree in Economic Science from the University of Wuppertal in Germany.

Mr. Maiga’s career started in Shell as retail manager for Guinea and Mali where he changed the face of retail business with his innovative and leadership approach to selling fuels and lubricants, progressing to become the Country Chairman for Mali.

Following the transition from Shell to Vivo Energy in 2011, Mr. Maiga was appointed Managing Director of Vivo Energy Mali. In each of the countries he has led, he has built very formidable businesses.

CJ’s visit to Dormaa-Ahenkro is a major boost to local justice delivery – Residents

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/R),- Some Dormaa-Ahenkro residents have described the maiden visit of the Chief Justice (CJ) Mr Kwasi Anin-Yeboah to the area as a major boost for justice delivery system in the area.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Dormaa in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region, they said the visit showed “the importance the CJ attached to the justice delivery systems in the country.

The Chief Justice was at Dormaa-Ahenkro earlier on Thursday to inaugurate the Child-Friendly Gender-based Violence Court (CF-GBVC), which is one of the four created by the Judicial Service in the country.

The CF-GBVC created with support from UNICEF is equipped with child-friendly equipment including; testifying and children playing rooms with books and toys to meet desirable standard.

It is located within the local Circuit Court building which has been newly-refurbished as part of the funding support by UNICEF.

Mr. Eric K. Aboyer, the Dormaa Central Municipal Director of Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) said the presence of the CF-GBVC would facilitate expeditious hearing of cases involving child offenders to ensure speedy dispensation justice in the interest of children.

Mr. Aboyer commended the CJ and the UNICEF, saying “with the CF-GBVC I’ve now become relieved because I have to be traveling to the Magistrate Court at Wamfie, Dormaa East for enforcement of child maintenance cases”.

Mr. Patrick Adjei, a staff of the National Commission for Civic Education said the perpetrators of offences regarding child-abuse and gender-based violence would be reduced drastically.

PFAG proposes 10 percent budgetary allocation to agricultural sector

Tamale,- The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has appealed to government to consider allocating not less than 10 percent of its 2022 budget for the agricultural sector.

It said inspite of the fact that the agriculture sector lost its position on the economy to the service sector as the largest contributor to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it was necessary government took the bold steps in its 2022 budget to revamp the sector.

The Association said the pressure on the agriculture value chain and the attendant difficulties regarding the impact of climate change on smallholder farmers, lukewarm attention to the sector have significant implications for Ghana’s post COVID-19 recovery strategy and food security.

“It follows therefore that the upcoming budget should reflect in the post COVID-19 recovery strategy and food security”.

The statement was in release signed by Dr Charles Nyaaba, Head of Programmes and Advocacy, PFAG and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale.

The statement wants government to ensure successful implementation of the Medium-Term Agricultural Sector Investment Plan (METASIP) by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) in fulfilment of the Maputo and Malabo declaration of increasing public investment at least ten percent in the agriculture sector by member countries.

Mr Ken Ofori Atta, Minister of Finance is set to present the 2022 budget and economic policy statement to parliament on November 17, 2021.

The statement added that “government in its budget statement should develop mechanisms aimed at tackling the menace of climate change and variabilities, limited investment in new innovations, limited investment in inputs subsidies and mechanization services in order to enhance food security in the country”.
