Takoradi,- The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has described the installation of CCTV cameras at intersections and on highways across the country as a good investment that will be leveraged on to diffuse the apprehension of the public.
The move, according to the Service, would enhance the capacity of the state to ensure compliance especially with road traffic regulations and reduce the incidence of crime in the country.
Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the Director of Public Affairs of the GPS said this in an interview with the media when the IGP visited the main lorry station in Takoradi.
“This is contemporary and it is a good investment, which will enhance the ability of the state to position itself in such a way that even if you commit a crime and the Police is not there, you know eyes are watching and the eyes are the cameras”, he said.
With the Surveillance system, the Police is able to monitor the traffic situations in the country and offenders are traced, arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
Superintendent Obeng said the ongoing monitoring system was on major roads and intersections in all the 18 police Regions and added that it would not only check road users, but would help check criminal activities as well.
He noted that in recent times, the country was being confronted with an escalating road safety challenge, which called for a multi-stakeholder approach to address the menace which had impacted gravely on lives.
Between January and October this year, a total of 13,244 road crashes were recorded with over 2,380 deaths.
This, he said, must be of a concern to all saying “it is a clarion call for proper planning. Road crashes is multi-facetted, there are concerns relating to Police. Others are about transport operators, drivers and road engineering”.
He said the Police MTTD would be adequately equipped, to increase their visibility on the road to ensure that people complied with road laws, especially traffic and road use behaviour.
