Respect for human dignity is nonnegotiable – NCCE

Tema,- Mr Karikari Kenneth, District Director, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Krachi West, has acknowledged that “if Ghana is to develop, the inherent dignity of all persons, irrespective of their status, must be respected and honoured”.

He told the Ghana News Agency that Chapter Five, Article 15 (1) of the 1992 Constitution stipulates that, “the dignity of all persons shall be inviolable” and that if such constitutional provision was overlooked it could lead to “rioting and neglect in the society leading to conflict, disagreement, tensions and violent extremism in the country.”

Mr Karikari, therefore, called on Government, politicians, religious groups, public office holders, security personnel, the media and the general public to ensure that in all aspects of their dealings, the respect for human dignity is upheld in the best possible way.

The NCCE in collaboration with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in the Krachi West District of the Oti Region has begun a series of media engagements including radio programmes aimed at educating the general public on Human Dignity and the 1992 Constitution in generally.

Madam Gifty Amenuke, Krachi West District Director, CHRAJ, who joined the NCCE in one of such programmes, cited instances where some persons deliberately treated others with disrespect and said human beings, regardless of age, ability, status, gender, ethnicity must be treated with some modicum of respect.

She said when people were divided and given a value based on characteristics like class, gender, religion, and so on, it created unequal societies where discrimination festered, thus recognizing human dignity was important.

“In our daily life activities, there is no respect for human dignity because some men impregnate women and either deny or run away from their responsibilities. “Also, some women give birth and neglect or run away from them to fend for themselves while others surrender them to servitude,” she explained.
