Prosecution demands life for contract killing of Georgian in Berlin

Berlin,Dec 7, (dpa/GNA) – The federal prosecution has demanded a life sentence, in the trial for the murder of a Georgian in a park in the German capital Berlin.

In addition, the prosecution asked the Berlin Court of Appeal on Tuesday to establish the special gravity of guilt in the case of a conviction of the accused Russian.

It was a politically motivated act, Federal Prosecutor Nikolaus Forschner said in his plea, which lasted several hours and was held together with his colleague Lars Malskies. The accused had carried out a “state order to kill” on German soil.

The highest German prosecution authority had taken over the case because of the suspected political background. After about 14 months of trial, they see this as confirmed.

The crime on August 23, 2019, in the Kleiner Tiergarten was about retaliation – for the Georgian’s participation in the second Chechen war and his “enmity towards the Russian state.” The accused had placed himself “in the service of a mission.”

The killed 40-year-old, a Georgian of Chechen origin who had been living in Germany as an asylum seeker since the end of 2016, had been classified as a Chechen terrorist by Russian authorities.
