– A pavilion has been handed over to the Tongo Senior High Technical School in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region to serve as a temporary dining hall for the students.
Mr Martin Atia Aduko, a native of the district was the sponsor of the GHc20,000.00 facility expected to serve a student population of about 130 who hitherto dined under a tree in the school.
Handing over the facility to the school, Mr Aduko explained that the gesture was in response to an appeal made by the students and school management whose meals were served in the open and created lots of inconvenience and exposure to unhygienic conditions.
Mr Aduko also promised to lobby more friends and relatives to support the flooring and other unfinished aspects of the structure and called on residents to take a keen interest in the development projects in the area and stressed that government alone cannot address all the challenges facing the school.
Mr Thomas Apana, Headmaster of the school applauded the philanthropist for responding immediately to the appeal of the school and indicated that the school was absorbed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) in 2014.
He said the school currently has a population of 130 who used to dine under a tree and added that the situation was bad particularly during rainy seasons.
He noted that the school runs courses such as General Arts, Business, Home Economics, Technical courses including Applied Electricity, Building, and construction and expressed worry that needed infrastructure such as dormitory for students, staff accommodation, water facilities, and lack of toilet facilities was a challenge which compelled students to go the free range to ease themselves.
The Headmaster said that the clad facility could serve as a multipurpose facility such as a dining hall, assembly hall, and a classroom.
Hajia Adisa Emelia Abdulai, the District of Education, entreated the management of the school to document the land that the community has given to the school and also encouraged parents to ensure that their girl children completed their education.
Mr John Anaba, Upper East Regional Human Resource Director of GES, pledged the Directorate’s commitment to seek support from the Regional Coordinating Council and the District Assembly to assist in the infrastructural development of the school.
