MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT VISITS CONSTRUCTION SITE OF THE JAMES TOWN FISHING HABOUR

The Minister for Transport Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah has admonished contractors building the James Town fishing harbour to work assiduously to be able to meet the construction deadline for the project which is 31% completed.

He acknowledged the work being done and applauded the contractor for the work done so far. He encouraged them to keep up the pace of work so that the deadline of the project which is February 2023 would be achieved.

The Minister for Transport made these remarks when he paid a working visit to the construction site with his Deputy Ministers, the Member of Parliament (MP) for area and some management members of the Ministry.

Hon. Ofori Asiamah alerted the contractors that all properties that had to be removed around the project site would be done for the pace of work to increase. He said, “the Ministry has plans of engaging all property owners along the project site for them to be relocated so the project could go on smoothly”.

He added, the fisher folk and the contractors should see how they would work together to avoid activities of the fishermen affecting the construction, and the construction also not stopping entirely fishing activities which was the main means of livelihood for the people.

The Minister assured the contractors, the Ministry was going to do all it could to help them do their work without any hitches. He also called on the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to do their best in supervising the project so that the country got value for money and the project finished on time.

The MP for the area, Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuye commended the Ministry and Government for the project. He said it was good the project was being done in the area but pleaded it should not affect the livelihood of the fisher folk because that was what they depended on to feed themselves and their families.

He mentioned that if properties were going to be destroyed, then there should be some compensation packages for those who would be affected. He noted the families of these properties and all stakeholders should be engaged to reach an understanding before demolitions should go on.

He also called on the contractors to work to achieve the deadline they had agreed to.

Completed works on the construction site included, the construction of the breakwater body, 40,000 cubic meters of harbor basin dredging, 12,100 cubic meters of harbor basin reef clearing, 20,000 cubic meters of wharf foundation trench excavation, 2,774 prefabricated accropode blocks and 285 prefabricated wharf concrete blocks.

At the end of the project, facilities like, production and supporting office buildings, kindergartens, trading market, processing and commercial areas would be built as part of the fishing harbour.
