Kpone-Katamanso seeing more dog bites

Dr. Esther Pricilla Biamah-Danquah, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Health Director, has expressed worry about the rising cases of dog bite in the municipality and called for dog owners to make sure that their pets are given anti-rabies vaccine.

She said what they found more troubling was the fact that many of the people who were getting bitten by the dogs were school children.

She was speaking at the launch of an anti-rabies campaign in the municipality at Kpone near Tema.

For 12 days running, veterinary officers would be giving anti-rabies vaccine to dogs and other pets in the area.

Dr. Biamah-Danquah announced that for last year, alone, the municipality recorded a total of 248 dog bites, adding that 122 of these bites happened at Kpone.

She noted that rabies was a public health issue and that was why it needed to be given serious attention.

The exercise is a collaboration between the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Veterinary unit and Mission Rabies – UK.

About 20,000 dogs are expected to be vaccinated during the exercise.

Mr. Samuel Okoe Amanquah, the Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE), urged dog owners to take good care of their dogs by making sure that the animals did not stray.
