The General Secretary of the Ashanti Regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwame Zu, has also taken on government over the management of the economy.
According to him, claims by the government that the economy is doing well are untrue and should be disregarded.
He urged the government to admit that the economy needs immediate attention, stop trumpeting the supposed single-digit inflation achievement and fix the ailing economy to bring respite to Ghanaians.
“When you put together all the taxes that this government has imposed on Ghanaians, there is absolutely nothing to show for them. They are also touting single-digit inflation, but when did single-digit inflation become rice and stew?”
“They were the very people who told us that inflation was not fried rice and so nobody should tout it, and we accepted even though we did 33 months of single-digit inflation. But today, that is one of the key economic indicators they are relying upon to tout this economy as a booming economy. This is not a healthy economy, so they must admit that the economy is suffering, and we are in difficult times.”
He made these remarks when he appeared on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily programme on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.
Reckless spending and mismanagement cause of hardship, not COVID – Mahama
On the same issue, former President, John Dramani Mahama has once again taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his management of the economy.
Mr. Mahama is of the view that the COVID-19 pandemic has become the convenient excuse for President Akufo-Addo and the NPP government for their mismanagement of the economy.
He insisted that reckless spending in the 2020 polls by the president and the government is the cause of the difficulties Ghanaians have been plunged into.
According to him, spending in the 2020 polls produced the largest-ever budget deficit in the recent economic history of Ghana last year.
“COVID-19 has become the convenient whipping boy and has been cited as the reason for the crisis we face now and the attendant economic hardships. Yes, COVID-19 affected the economy, and no one can dispute that. It is however not the main reason why we are in the current hole we find ourselves.”
“COVID-19 only became a pretext for reckless election-related spending, which produced the largest-ever budget deficit in the recent economic history of Ghana last year.”
