Ga, (UW/R),– Residents of some communities in the Ga Electoral Area in the Wa West District have appealed to the government and benevolent individuals and organisations to help them complete a health project to improve healthcare delivery.
The communities, which included Ga, Gadi, Kyemuoteng and Maaduteng, among others, are building a delivery room, Out Patient Department (OPD) and other ancillary facilities, to help improve access to quality healthcare services.
Mr Maalibunaa Saaka, the Unit Committee Chairman of the Ga Electoral Area, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that since the facility was elevated to the status of a health centre in 2020, access to quality service delivery at the facility remained a serious challenge.
He said it did not have the necessary facilities, including a delivery room and beds.
Mr Saaka said the facility, which served over ten communities, including Gadi, Kyemuoteng, Maaduteng, Samambo and Soglayiri, had only two beds.
He said the former Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Joseph Yieleh Chire, had donated GHC5,000.00 to help execute the project to improve safe delivery.
Madam Hawa Salifu, a resident of Ga, said the population of the communities far outweighed the capacity of the health facility, making access to quality services difficult.
“You go to the health centre to seek treatment, so if you go there and have to lie on the floor then your situation can become worse,” she said.
Mr Sopinetey Kombotey, the Kyemuoteng Community Head, said there was a single delivery bed at the facility, which compelled the health staff to sometimes help pregnant women to deliver on the floor.
Residents of other communities, who attend the Ga Health Centre for service delivery, also raised similar concerns of inadequate space and facilities at the health centre.
Mr Loggu-Naa Mumuni, the Assembly Member for the area, said the Wa West District authorities had cited resource constraints for their inability to give the facility a facelift.
