Kumasi,- Candidates sitting for the 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Kumasi, have been encouraged to overcome fear and concentrate on the task at hand.
“This is your first academic hurdle in life, so do not panic or engage in any malpractices since that could jeopardize your dreams,” Mr Sam Pyne, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), noted.
According to him, there were lots of prospects ahead of the students, especially in the face of the implementation of the government’s ‘Free Senior High School (SHS)’ Programme, designed to contribute significantly to Ghana’s human resource development.
Mr Pyne, who was touring some BECE Centres in Kumasi, said the Metropolitan Assembly was with the candidates in prayers, therefore, it was expected of them to build confidence in the course of the examination.
He was accompanied by officials of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
A total of 10, 679 candidates, made up of 5, 083 boys and 5, 596 girls, drawn from 216 public and private schools in the metropolis, are writing this year’s examination scheduled between November 15-19.
In 2020, a total of 10, 365 candidates wrote the BECE, comprising 4, 990 boys and 5, 375 girls, according to figures released by the GES.
Some centres visited by the delegation included Opoku Ware School (OWASS) A, B, C and D, Kumasi Secondary and Technical School A and B, as well as Kumasi Anglican A, B and C.
All these centres had their examination papers intact and ready with the candidates present as they observed the COVID-19 safety protocols.
Mr Pyne cautioned the candidates to adhere to instructions given by the supervisors and invigilators in the course of the examination.
He urged them should demonstrate discipline at all times for the success of the academic exercise.
Mr David Oppong, the Metropolitan Director of Education, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), on the sidelines of the visit, said a total of 44 centres clustered into 23 locations were hosting the candidates.
The authorities, he said, were monitoring strictly the ongoing examination to foster sanity in the exercise.
