Mr Martin Konlan, The Bunkpurugu- Nakpanduri District Director of NCCE, who gave the advice, said it was incumbent on the youth to be patriotic towards nation-building without involving themselves in extreme violent activities.

He was speaking at the Bindi community in the district in the North East Region as part of a day’s dialogue session on violent extremism and ways to prevent it in the area.

Participants included Assembly Members drawn from all the 20 Electoral Areas in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District.

The event formed part of the Preventing Electoral Violence and Providing Security to the Northern Border Regions of Ghana project funded by the European Union to amongst others counter violent extremism in the country.

It was to enhance participants’ understanding of peacebuilding mechanisms, community-based mechanisms for countering violent extremism, identifying early warning signals, community surveillance, and basic community-based strategies for countering arms proliferation.

Mr Konlan said, “Violent extremism is a worrying phenomenon across the globe, which deserves to be tackled with zeal and seriousness, hence today’s dialogue session.”

Reverend Nathaniel Amoo, a Pastor in the District, took participants through various peace-building mechanisms, and called on law enforcement agencies to ensure crime perpetrators did not go unpunished to ensure justice and guarantee peace and security in the area.

He further appealed to stakeholders to strengthen structural institutions like religion and education to enable them to preach and promote peace for a healthy nation.

Superintendent Gadiako Emmanuel Yao, Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Police Commander encouraged participants to report any act of crime to the Police for swift actions to help maintain peace and tranquillity in the district.

Mr George Otoo, an Officer from Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority in the District, spoke about border security, urging participants to be extra vigilant with strangers in their communities to detect violent extremists, who might come to undermine the development of the district.
