Damang (W/R),- Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) in collaboration with Huni-Valley Youth Development Association, Zero Waste Bosomtwi and Damang Youth Association, have organized a clean-up exercise to help keep a clean and healthy environment.
The five-hour exercise began at 0700 hours at Huni-Valley and Damang as part of activities to observe this year’s world clean-up day.
The participants desilted choked gutters, swept the streets, weeded and collected refuse from unapproved places at their respective communities.
Mr Eric Kwame Gaibor, Damang Youth Chairman, explained that the aim of the exercise was to help improve upon the sanitation situation in the area.
He lauded AGL for providing Personal Protective Equipment, working implements such as wheel barrows, long brooms, rakes, cutlasses, shovels and refreshment for those who spent time and energy to assist in making the exercise a success.
He also commended participants for desilting the drains along the Damang-Tarkwa road to ensure free flow of water when it rains.
Mr Gaibor added that “it was necessary for every community to ensure we keep our surroundings clean, hence the group will organize monthly clean-up exercise to promote good sanitation practices among the citizens”.
Mr Justice Frimpong, Huni-Valley Youth Chairman, for his part advised the public not to dispose their refuse in water bodies and bushes, stressing that, keeping the environment clean would prevent the outbreak of communicable disease.
Mr Ebenezer Afful, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zero Waste Bosomtwi, said he was excited to associate with the programme because keeping the environment clean was a shared responsibility.
He appealed to AGL and other stakeholders to assist his outfit to create awareness on the need to keep the environment clean always.
Addressing participants separately after the exercise, Mr Abdel-Razak Yakubu, Community Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, said because AGL had been educating its host communities consistently on good sanitation practices, they did not hesitate to sponsor the event when the three institutions approached them for support.
He said “the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly has collaborated with Gold Fields to reconstitute and train the Water and Sanitation committees as we have demonstrated what clean-up exercise can do, it is our hope that they would continue”.
