Ghana coach, Milovan Rajevac has insisted that he is hoping AS Roma youngster, Felix Afena-Gyan will show up for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nation [Afcon] next month.
The 18-year-old has been named in Ghana’s 30-man provisional squad for the 33rd edition of the Afcon in Cameroon.
The promising forward was handed a call up in Ghana’s final round of games of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in November but failed to show up.
According to him, the invitation came too early for him, citing a desire to continue his development under Jose Mourinho at AS Roma.
“I thought it was important for me to stay in Trigoria to accumulate training under Mourinho’s orders to continue improving and growing,” Afena-Gyan said.
However, Rajevac and his technical team are hoping the youngster will honour the invitation this time around.
“Felix Afena-Gyan is on the list because he’s showing potential and he’s trying to establish himself in his club and we want to have him here, so we will see what is going to happen,” he said on Tuesday.
“This is a chance for him to get to know the others, to understand the requirements and become part of the Black Stars so he is on the list. We expect him to come.”
Afena-Gyan is expected to team up with Black Stars teammates in Doha where the team will camp for 17 days before they jet off to Yaounde.
The Black Stars will play three friendly matches while in Qatar as part of their preparations ahead of the tournament.
The Ghana Football Association has already concluded talks with Algeria while engagements are ongoing for two additional matches.
Ghana who are aiming to win their fifth continental trophy after 40 years are housed in Group C alongside, Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.
The tournament has been scheduled to kick off on January 9 to February 6.
